The Danvers Girls Soccer team finished off their regular season schedule with a 1 - 1 tie with Beverly on Wednesday afternoon. The tie clinched the Danvers team sole possession of second place in the N.E.C. with an 8 - 2 - 2 league record, 1 point ahead of Beverly.
"We came out and dominated early," said coach Jimmy Hinchion. "We had several good chances but couldn't get that first goal."
It was Beverly that opened up the scoring in the 22nd minute of play. "We made one mistake defensively and they made us pay for it. I felt that was really their only dangerous chance the whole game but they cashed in on it."
Danvers continued to maintain possession throughout the first half even after they lost their center mid and captain Alex Strangie to an ankle injury. The Falcons finally broke through when Kylie Plaza fed a through ball that senior captain Corey Persson neatly finished to tie the game at 1.
The game was a bit more even in the second half. Neither team had any real dangerous chances early. Goalie Mia Koutoulas shutdown what almost was a breakaway opportunity by Beverly midway through the half. With only minutes remaining, Beverly was awarded a free kick just outside the Danvers box. The Danvers wall was up to the task though and blocked the Beverly shot. The game ended minutes later, 1 to 1.
I was really pleased with our defensive effort today. Erin Loehner, Katie McKenna, Kristin Yost, Brittney Zecha and Jackie Morse all played solid. Beverly has scored a ton of goals this season and we really shut them down both times we played them. I also liked the play of Stephanie Kowalski and Meghan Kenny who shared time filling in for Alex Strangie the entire second half. They both held the midfield together well for us."
Danvers finishes the season at 11 - 5 - 2 and now awaits to see who and where they will be playing in the Div. 2 North tournament, expected to start this Saturday.
"The girls are ready. We had a great regular season and now we're ready to start a new season and hopefully can play deep into the tournament."
