Plum Island Destruction: Should It Make Us Rethink Living Seaside?
The images of houses destroyed or made uninhabitable by the storm are a nightmare for shoreline homeowners — or people who some day want to be. Does it change how you feel about living seaside?
During the past weekend we saw scenes of destruction from just a few towns to our north on Plum Island. Those images might give anyone with seaside property nightmares.
One home was washed off its foundations and is a total loss. Pictures and video of it sitting on the rocky beach at a nauseating 45 degree angle has dominated newscasts. Other homes were declared off-limits because of structural damage.
Of course, everyone who owns waterfront property — or wants to own property by the sea — knows this could happen. That's theory, though. To see it take place nearby, does that change your calculus about either keeping a waterfront home or buying one?
