What did you think of Romney's speech and the convention? Will you vote for him in November?
Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney accepted the Republican nomination for President of the United States on Thursday night.
Romney gave a speech that included a more personal view of his life as well as focused on adding jobs, criticizing President Obama’s policies, repealing Obamacare and promoting his business background.
Romney did not discuss his experience as governor of Massachusetts during the nationally-televised speech.
We want to hear from you – what did you think of the former governor’s speech? What did you think of the convention? Were you swayed in either direction after watching the proceedings from Tampa? From his experience as governor of the commonwealth, are you more apt or less apt to vote for Romney?

Let's see Mitt the Flip-flopper was 47th out of 50 in job creation while he was governor (the President has turned around a loss of 750,000 jobs per month to creating 100,000's of jobs per month), Mittens went on a 3 country tour and managed to insult people in all 3 countries (the President has gotten us out of Iraq and Osama bin Laden is no more), and Mitt has changed sides on the issues (coal, abortion, health care, etc, etc, etc) that one could get dizzy (while the President has maintained a straight and steady course).
Sorry but the Flip master is not ready for prime time!

47th out of 50 in job creation. That's a good talking point, Gene. I saw that in an ad recently. Of course, that ad fails to mention that MA was basically at full employment at that point, but don't worry about facts.
Am I voting for Mitt? Something really weird would have to happen between now and then to make me do that, but let's be honest.

Every Mass. Governor leaves a balanced budget - its the law! and Mass employment had little to do with Mitten's efforts. The President inherited an economy where the the Republicans gave 2 major tax cuts in the midst of 2 wars and then found out they couldn't pay for any of it.

While he we governor he also took us from the 35th state in job creation(not great) and left us in the 47th position. Look it up. I'm an independent voter who has voted on both sides of the aisle. Yes, the ugly side of politics. Just admit it, you like your money, and you want more of it. You are a selfish person in life, and you care more about your wallet than the country. Good ole Ayn Rand and Milton Friedman rearing their ugly head again. For this election, if you are voting for Romney, you fall in one of two camps. Either you are too stupid to understand you are being manipulated and lied to, or you value the size of your wallet over the good of the country. I will assume that because you are looking at a local news website that you are articulate enough to not buy the GOP's outright lies so I will assume it is your wallet you are concerned about. . .Lets get real, I could care less about who you vote for, it is your own prerogative and right to vote for what is best for yourself. Romney left the state after laying off thousands of state worker and the budget for the next year was not even closed to balanced he borrowed money from the rainy day fund to cover the budget while he was in office because he couldn't do what he claimed he could do actually balance a budget. And his bull dog buddy Healy lying to cover up the facts doesn't change them.
How many federal workers is he going to put into the unemployment line claiming it will balance the budget.
As for his speach yesterday it was a joke and all he did was attack the president and offered nothing but the same hate and lies of the repulbican party.
The only way this country is going to work properly is if the obstructionists minority in congress are removed with people who actually want to do their job.

They are already giving away tickets to Obama's speech at his convention and he talks to half filled houses on the trail - even less if you take away the union people who are paid to attend.
It is not over yet, but it looks like Leading From Behind is a bad campaign strategy.
Romney will beat him to New Orleans and Obama plays second fiddle; and by the way the empty chair metaphor has already stuck. Look for more empty chairs to pop up all over the campaign.

Mitt Romney came to see me recently to show me that he knew what it was like to be middle class.
So I let him know that he should wear some old clothes cause we were going to do some mulching in my back yard. That would be with a mulcher and we would chew up some lawn debris.
So in he drives, uh no, he had a driver, and he hops out and wants to know where the elevator is to my upper level garage.
Sorry Mitt, but I have a one car garage so you'll need to park in the drive, which is where you are already.
Oh, ok, but next time you are in California, come see me and I'll show you my new house with the two level garage and the elevator for the cars to get to the second level.

Our troops our being shot up by the same allies we support in Afghanistan ? Great job Obama, where's the American Citizen Outrage as the body bags of our soldiers come home every day. The Media hides all of this ! Yet Obama picks the citizens from other countries to target, using cowardly drones. This agitates a veminent hatred of America, where is the media on this one ? We allow our country to execute one or two targets, while we murder through collateral damage ten, fifteen to forty other citizens of sovereign countries ? That would be like China sending over drones to the United States and killing your child, aunt, father or mother.

Actually, no President has ever had presidential experience before taking office, except for Grover Cleveland, who back in 1893 started serving his second non-sequential term as President. I know Romney was a CEO of Bain & Company and governor of Massachusetts, but whether or not these qualify as "presidential experience" in terms of the Oval Office is under debate.
As far as the sovereign nations issue is concerned, Romney has proclaimed that he will prevent Iran from building a nuclear arsenal, which obviously doesn't rule out invasion of that particular sovereign nation. So this kind of foreign policy may unfortunately continue regardless as it has done over the past decade, maybe with drones, maybe not. Then again, it can be demonstrated that Romney's position on any issue is always subject to change, given the weather.
As for Obama's being a "Marxist Socialist", it's hard to see how he got that label, especially after he had signed up people like Goldman Sachs alum Timothy Geithner and free market cheerleader Lawrence Summers in 2009 to join his administration.

In answer to the original question, I liked his speech. I also like the change in direction he wants to take our country.
The democrats took over the congress in 2007. They have had 5 years to address the issues and can't even pass a budget.
We are on the brink of a financial abyss and Obama has offered no plan except to tax the rich which will not come close to closing the budget gap and will drive unemplayment up even more. You cannot hire more government workers as Ms Warren wants and expect to climb out of this mess. That math just does not work. Growth has to come from the private sector.
I will vote for Romney/Ryan.

Romney offered no specifics on what actions he would take to fix the economy. He didn’t make a case for voting for him. He spent a lot of time dwelling on the past but skipped the period of the first decade of the 21st century. But that’s the period we need to focus on the most since that’s when everything went wrong. Romney would prefer we forget that period when we tried the republican approach and it resulted in disaster. He won’t tell us his plans, he won’t show us his tax returns, and he consistently and blatantly tells lies about his own record and about Obama’s. His company, Bain Capital was expert at outsourcing jobs and slashing personnel costs. Romney has nothing to offer but trickle- down economics which has already been proven to be a failed approach.
Obama was unable to fully revive the economy that had crashed and burned and was on life support. He took the emergency actions to stop the bleeding and stabilize the situation. We now need to figure a way forward and nobody knows how to do this, but we need to try new approaches which Obama is open to but Romney is not. Unlike Romney, Obama is unwilling to leave people behind and won’t allow the most vulnerable among us to be the only ones who feel the pain of deficit reduction. We may still be struggling but the way out does not exist in the past. We are moving forward now and we are not going back Mitt, we are just not going to do it.

I wish I could be on the South Lawn of the White House on Jan 20th to save goodbye to Obama as he heads back to Chicago for good. Our long national nightmare will be over. Romney's speech spelled out all we need to know and that happy days will return. As an aside, the car elevator has been installed in his California home because Mrs. Romney has multiple sclerosis. How should one spend his wealth if not to take care of his family to the best of his ability? Maybe the Preident's brother living in a box despite the Obama's vast wealth should be the subject of discussion when the discussion centers around how the candidates spend their money. I had not realized that loving one's country meant loving big government spending -- that you for that insight, Michael. After all, we didn't create that, the government did, and the government is the one thing to which we all belong. I am beginning to think that these aren't merely slips of the tongue, but that Democrats actually believe that government and country are one and the same.
Michael, here are the facts: conservatives are more generous than liberals. In every measurable way, conservatives give more money to charities, donate more time, and give more blood than do liberals. Indeed, both Obama and Elizabeth Warren donate an exceedingly small portion of their earnings to charity. So, it's not about which party cares about helping other people -- both do. It's about believing that we are all grown ups and that we don't need government to be daddy and mommy. And it's about believing that a desire to spend other people's money is just as selfish and greedy as a desire to keep one's own money.

But I think that an even better indicator of generosity is the fact that conservatives are 45 percent more likely to donate blood -- it's really the best indicator because 1) there's no financial incentive to do so 2) it's moderately uncomfortable, and 3) it benefits people in need 100% of the time. That, even more so than the fact that conservatives donate more money and time to charities, is far more convincing that conservatives are more generous.
But being more generous isn't the only reason to be a conservative. This is done at places like Dunkin Donuts every day, the local pizza shot, my mechanic that helps me out etc. I will pay more that the bill if they give me a break, not report it on taxes.

Looks like the No True Scotsman fallacy to me, Michael. BTW, I was being facetious with my original comment. I don't really see it as a serious study and I'm not even sure that it was peer reviewed let alone published in a scientific journal. Oh, and by the way ... TMI. The study that reveals that conservatives are happier, on the other hand, was peer reviewed and published.
Lastly, you must have failed to read this part of the article that I linked you to: "According to Google’s figures, if donations to all religious organizations are excluded, liberals give slightly more to charity than conservatives do. But Mr. Brooks says that if measuring by the percentage of income given, conservatives are more generous than liberals even to secular causes."
So, you see, liberals, on average are richer than conservatives, but they give less -- they give less to churches, and they even give less, as a portion of their incomes, to secular causes. And, of course, you have failed to explain why it is that conservatives donate more blood than do liberals.
The point of this exercise wasn't really to prove that conservatives are better people than liberals. There are happy, generous liberals, and there are stingy, unhappy conservatives. But I think that the data as a whole support what I believe is the true philosophical difference between liberals and conservatives: conservatives believe in local control while liberals also do, but less so.

Yes, 13%, but check out what percent he gives to charitable organizations. He probably paid a higher percent in taxes and charitable contributions than most paid in taxes. What percent did President Obama pay in taxes and what percent did he give to charitable contributions.? Let's stick to the issues and respect the opinions of others.
Inform yourself by reading the whole Health Reform document and see what is really in there...not all good.. There is way too much division in this country right now, much of it caused by President Obama. And his "surrogates". Read what the Romney/Ryan camp is really saying about Medicare, and stop relying on campaign ads and the media for information on their beliefs.

Wake up. The Democrats, who we all used to vote for, have been co-opted and now are running a social agenda ("from those who have, to those who need" -- wealth redistribution is step 1 in the world of Karl Marx). They had their chance, and as much as there are very good arguments against Romney (and I really DON'T like him), the arguments against Obama and the now hugely socialist left Democratic party are just as solid, but speak a lot louder.
I was horrified that we elected someone who ran around with domestic terrorists, never had a real job, can't seem to speak without someone putting words on a tele-prompter, emerged from one of the most corrupt political machines in the U.S. and did nothing as a senator, to the most powerful position in the world. The Brits and most of Europe thought it was the funniest thing they had ever seen and thought we lost our minds. Maybe McCain wasn't much to write home about, but did we really hate Bush that much that we would give up all reason and vote for this guy? He's only working for the unions... give me a break.
You can make every academic, elitist, naive argument in the world you want, but I think the Occupy Movement pushed us all over the edge. Nobody really is listening. Unemployment went from -700K jobs per month to adding 100K per month. It would have continued to go up, but the GOP took over congress and their obstructionist government stopped any jobs bills from passing. You know, so Obama wouldn't get re-elected. But labor force participation is at 63.5 percent, its lowest level since 1981. Many people have simply given up looking for work. This is why the employment rate per population has been mired at about 56-60 percent for the last eight months. Not even the Fed buys your argument, as it is now prepared to initiate QE3. We don't need to print new money -- we need to make old money more liquid. Let's make credit easier for well-qualified home-buyers and small businesses. Somehow though, the conservatives are the "god loving" people, the ones who supposedly understand how to live your life, yet they neither live their life, nor play one on the internet as they say they profess. It isn't even like having an empty suit, it is having an empty personality devoid of all the good things in life. That is ok with me though, you see i have done the hard work. I have challenged myself in life, and questioned my motives. Go back and re-read what I stated. I used no words against the person I was debating with, and instead showed how people who used those words to describe me, were instead revealing who they truly were as people. There is nothing hateful about truth.
Now, if you have lost "a lot of your 401k wealth", that is your issue of not being able to manage your money. Where is the ownership the GOP professes all the time? The stock market was 6500 within a month of Obama taking office its now over 13,000. If your stocks lost a "lot of retirement money" then you have your funds in the wrong accounts and are trusting the wrong money managers. That is not an attack, that is the simple truth.
You then, in your next sentence, after insinuating Obama for the loss of your own money, you accuse me of "blaming the past administration" for the shape our country is in. Do you even see what you are doing? You are blaming me for the stuff you are doing. Projection people. It is the SAME THING the other conservatives are doing. If the labor force participation rate were the same as it was in January 2009, the unemployment rate would now be 11.0 percent. Actual unemployment rate is 8.1 percent, and Obama himself projected an unemployment rate of 6.0 percent without his stimulus. The problem is that we are adding new private sector jobs, but not enough to keep up with the decline in public sector jobs.
Now, that is the problem. Now, how do we fix this mess?
One way is to reduce the crowding effect that government spending is having. But it is over-regulation that is killing the ability of businesses to expand -- more than half of all business owners identify regulations as the top obstacle to growth. A healthy start would be to delay the credit requirements of Dodd-Frank, but a full repeal of Sarbanes-Oxley Act, the Community Reinvestment Act, as well as Dodd-Frank would help far more than any federal stimulus or quantitative easing monetary policy might.

It's really amazing to read through these posts. I hope that some of those who commented weren't products of the Marblehead School system because that would be a stinging indictment of a quality education here in town. At the end of the day all these arguments are peripheral. Jobs up, jobs down...just a distraction. Jobs are not where we want them to be nor where they should be. Businesses aren't hiring because of economic uncertainty and the cost of regulatory compliance that eats into operating costs. Are you better off than you were four years ago? For most, the answer is no. Will your children be better off than you? With trillions of dollars of national debt on their shoulders and a rapidly eroding moral foundation, no they will likely not be (regardless of who wins in November). The President has had four years to make more progress and, regardless of the reason, he has failed. The stakes are too high to just hope that he'll do better in the next four. Time for a change.
You should also look at it this way: moving into 2013, Republicans will control the House and, quite probably, the Senate. If the President is re-elected it is unlikely much at all will be accomplished. Balance of powers. At least with a Republican in the White House we might make some progress.

I truly believe you are very wrong Mary. Are YOU better off now? For the first time --our children and grand children will not be better off then we were and they can not find jobs as they graduate from--any college. When my friends and I got out of college we were able to find a decent job, get married, and buy a home right away---in the town we grew up in--if we so desired. Not now--not here in this town---no ---and jobs are very hard to find in the field the kids were trianed in and the parents spent a fortune on. Huge dept is facing everyone and many people are losing their beautiful homes they worked so hard to buy. Something has to change and Obama had his chance. Romney has had lots of business experience and knows what to do. We don't need any more lies from Obama and he can not be trusted. Yes we can blame the President---he has been our leader for four years and down graded and has made terrible statements about this wonderful USA. Well, we can agree to disagree. I do worry about my kids and the kind of future they will have. But I truly believe Mitt Romney's economics will make our economy worse. Obama has not lied. He is his own person, I trust him. I don't think you can blame him for everything. Please, I think you know that. The days of abundant jobs in this country has changed over the last 30 years....you can't compare how it was when you were young. And Obama never promised to reverse 30 years in 4 years. We no long make things in this country, it's all been sent to countries who can do it cheaper. Obama has programs to bring that back here, Romney does not. Veterans will be the losers if Romney wins. The Romney-Ryan budget has cut tens of billions. Yesterday's NY Times (Sept 10) brought it all to light and the method the GOP is making to hide it in the budget details. Because this is a complicated area of the budget, it's difficult to read and even more so to explain, so the Democrats have left it alone.
I think Romney and Ryan have to be asked the question directly; "Are you cutting VA benefits?" If they say no, frankly they're lying.
