SOUND OFF: President Obama and the Democratic Convention

What did you think of Obama's speech and the convention? Will you vote for him in November?

President Barack Obama capped off the Democratic National Convention with a speech that highlighted foreign policy wins, health care reform and immigration reform on Thursday.

Over three nights, Democratic leaders took aim at Republican nominee, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, and his running mate Congressman Paul Ryan. A number of Massachusetts Democrats spoke at the convention, including Gov. Deval Patrick, Congressional candidate Elizabeth Warren and Senator John Kerry.

After last week's Republican National Conventon, we asked readers to tell us what they thought of the convention and Romney.

Now, we want to hear from you about the Democratic convention. What did you think of the president's speech? What did you think of the convention? Were you swayed in either direction after watching the proceedings from Charlotte? Who are you supporting in November?

Let us know in the comment section below.

Obamao is the Manchurian candidate. He and his comrades have taken a wrecking ball to our economy with their excess spending. His policies have made a bad situation worse. The dollar has lost value, defecit and debt are out of control, gas up 100% on his watch, incomes are down, home values down, unemployment is up, # of people on public assistance is up. Time for a regime change.

Do a fact check. The President is the lowest gov't spender since Eisenhower. Lower than W. Bush and Saint Ronnie Reagan. Since you are a Republican, I know this info will not enter your brain, but here's a chart illustrating the actually facts from Forbes Magazine. http://bit.ly/smallestspender

Your revisionist history doesn't hold water. It was George Bush and the Republicans that took record surpluses and turned them into record deficits. It was George Bush and the Republicans that gave not one but two major tax cuts in the middle of 2 wars (first time in US history), it is George Bush and the failed republican fiscal policies that casued this country to go into a deep recession (remember when the economists were talking about the possibility of a depression), and it was George Bush, Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell and the rest of the republican stooges in Congress that formulated a fiscal policy that was costing this country 750,000 jobs per month. So don't make up the facts - learn them. Then again, right wingers don't really care much for eductation.

The housing bubble bursting and the banks being over leveraged caused the recession none of which had to do with Bush policies. But if it makes you feel better to blame Bush because obama is a failure that is your right.

The annotated version of the article that I cited, which refutes jorne's article:

1. jorne's article arbitrarily switches between CBO and OMB estimates in a way that produces the most favorable outcome. If one were to consistently use CBO estimates, the outcome would be significantly different

2. The article that jorne posted blames certain spending on Bush, that more fairly ought to be attributed to Obama. For example, Obama signed a $410 billion spending bill that Bush opposed, and he did it two months after Bush had left office. jorne's article attributes this to Bush spending.

3. Perhaps most significantly, as senator from Illinois, Obama voted *for* Bush's 2009 spending bill. Therefore, it's hard to blame the 2009 budget entirely on Bush, which jorne's article does.

I am not swayed by either candidate but I think we need a change. I am not better off than I was 4 years ago.Obama talked about how we are using less foreign oil but it means nothing at the pump.World news says the National Debt is equal to spending $900k per minute.4 more years? No way.

John, you are better off now than four years ago. Gas prices are just as high as they were before Obama. Also, gov't spending has decreased under Obama. The past three republican administrations have contributed more to the national deficit than all other presidencies combined. We haven't fully recovered from the mess Bush left us, but we absolutely cannot go back to his failed policies. Four more years!

I'm sure Bishop Willard Romney is a nice man who loves his wife and family and that people like him. But that isn't the point when voting for president. I don't care how much or little the president smiles. I do care that he has integrity and doesn't have things to hide ... you know like why won't he release more tax records? Also, what is his policy THIS week on pro-choice issues and same sex marriage. Check the content of his debate with Ted Kennedy in 1994! And for the economy? He wants to give tax cuts to the richest 1% and cut the deficit at the same time. As Bill Clinton said, "Do the arithmetic!" And think of the Supreme Court. A President Romney will not appoint someone who will respect a woman's right to choose and it could mean a reversal of Roe vs Wade. Republicans want government out of our lives, except when it comes to the bedroom!
Please. Vote the issues. Check the facts. When someone sends you stuff about President Obama doing this or that, check it on Snopes.com or fact checker! Don't vote for someone because he has nice hair or because he's white. Vote the issues and think of your children's and grandchildren's future. A President Romney would be like a Herbert Hoover ... exactly what we don't need.

You know, I do think I'm better off than I was 4 years ago. Sure, things aren't all the way back, but I'm confident about the path we are on. I'm confident that we are climbing out of this recession and are doing it without the extreme measures being taken in Greece and other places and without excessive burdens on the poor and middle class. I don't believe trickle-down economics works and I'm looking forward to supporting a President who understands recovery has to work for all Americans.

That means nothing. On the day Obama took office the economy was in a freefall and gas prices were plummetting as a result. 6 months prior to that under Bush, prices hit $4.13 which was a record high at the time. Was that Obama's fault too?

As his detractors even said when Bush was in office, the president has little or nothing to do with short term gasoline prices. Even if it was so, the most-pro energy, pro-drill everywhere to hell with the ecosystem president we've ever had STILL holds the record for the highest gas prices ever (Aug 08)....so it's pretty obvious that any connection is a bit remote at best.

Bill

1:41 pm on Friday, September 7, 2012

Gas prices are nearly double. The labor force has fallen by several million, in fact if the labor force was the same as Jan 09 the unemployment rate would be over 11.4%. We were told that the if the $800 billion stimulus passed, we would be at 5.5% unemployment now. We spent that money with virtually nothing to show for it, except the bill for our kids. Today's job numbers are proof that Obama has been at the helm for the worst recovery in our history. He has also added $5 Trillion to the national debt.

Yes, he took over a mess and Bush was bad, no argument. However, his policies have brought the economy to a halt. We have less that 2% GDP growth. There is no evidence four more years will be better, in fact more gridlock would be certain. His speech last night was small and tired. It is time for change and to try an new approach. Romney is not Bush the make up of Congress is different. Time for a new path - this one is not working. 25 million of our fellow citizens can't find suitable work. There is more to this election than free contraception and same sex marriage.

And Obama has had to deal with the Republicans in congress obstructing all attempts at trying to turn things around for the better. That is why it is so important to vote for ELIZABETH WARREN and let brown go back to folding laundry. Hey, does Romney really need to get that elevator for his car in La Jolla??? Gas prices hit their highest levels in history under pro-oil Bush (W), August 08. Endless saber rattling about bombing Iran is the greatest cause of world spikes in crude oil these days.

Nor has Obama added $5 trillion to the debt. Budgets work on a fiscal year, not a presidential year. The federal deficit on 10/1/09, the day Obama's first budget took effect, was $12 trillion. Today it's close to $16 trillion. You're off by a trillion....a thousand billions.

More importantly, what is the annual amount added to the debt? Bush increased the annual deficit from $133 billion to $1,885 billion (1.9 trillion), an increase of over 14 times (1,400%!). Obama started with Bush's $1.9 trillion, reduced it in his first fiscal year to $1.7 trillion, then again down to $1.2 trillion last year and is on track to do the same this year. How did he do it? Laying off tens of thousands of public employees, either directly or indirectly, was a large part of it....which, ironically, made the unemployment numbers worse, by a lot. And by ending Bush's boondoggle in Iraq.

Here's the data,

Obama's first and only budget. There has been no budget passed in over three years. His last three budgets have got zero votes in congress. He can't even get his own party to vote for it. Obama did not end the war in Iraq. He was only following the SOFA agreement made under the Bush administration. The UE numbers are bad because obama is a complete failure. If the employment participation rate was the same as it was when he took office UE would be over 11.1%. You guys were probably defending Carter at this point as well. How well did that work out?

John....ok, let's see if I have this correct.

"Obama has added $5 trillion to the deficit" (which we disproved). But, "he has only had one budget" since he's been in office. Ok, I see, the deficit is all his fault, but when we see that he's been reducing the amount we're adding to it, Obama has nothing to do with it. Sure, that's fair. (!)

Unemployment? All Obama's fault. But wait, "government can not create jobs" is screamed over and over by the GOP, only the private sector can do that, they chant. Yet, when unemployment figures stay static, it's Obama's fault, you know, the ONE guy who can NOT effect those numbers, by the GOP's own rhetoric. Logical, somehow, in doublespeak land.

Then there's this....

http://www.ourfuture.org/blog-entry/2011104219/tea-party-businesses-stop-hiring

And I'm still dying to read the full text of the GOP latest Jobs Bill. Because, as they swore when they took the House in '10, "We're going to focus like a laser on unemployment and the deficit." Whereupon they did absolutely zero about either. Rather, in the words of the (GOP) Senate Minority Leader, "Our number one priority is to make sure Obama is a one term president." And, including state initiatives, sponsored nearly 300 anti-choice, war on women bills, vs. zero jobs bills.

This election is about a few billionaires protecting their own personal interests with an orgy of campaign spending to toss that up-ity "colored fella" out of office. Just so we're clear.

No Lexi, I'm feeling pretty confident about this upcoming election. When you compare the party platforms, the Republican's is just embarrassing to say the least. They stand for (1) suppressing civil rights (2) controlling reproductive rights and (3) hoarding global wealth while devastating the economy. Their policies lead to teacher, police, and fire department layoffs. Sadly, things just get worse under them. I think people realize this and that is why they try to suppress voting rights too. Regardless of who's fault it was you can't build a strong economy that is based on taking money away from earners and handing it out to non-earners. The economy is recovering despite Obama, not because of him. I don't think Romney can do anything about it either. Strong economy comes from private citizens conducting business, not from free healthcare and extended unemployment benefits. How about some EMPloyment benefits so we can get back to work and stop living off handouts? Socialist programs don't work because they are based on getting something for doing nothing. A real economy is based on people doing something to get something.

The same things that concerned me in 2008 are still true today. Obama's lack of experience made him unqualified to hold the office from the start and his failures as a president have proven that view to be true. You can't just become CEO of the world's largest organization (the U.S. govt) when the only jobs you have held before were 'mediocre constitutional law professor' and 'community organizer'. I know 15 year old kids in this town with more practical experience than that, but I would no sooner elect them president than I would vote for Obama this year. He has failed at his job because he didn't have the skills, developed through practical experience, to begin with. Did you know that he has only met with his cabinet twice since the state of the union? Is he really that arrogant that he thinks he can do it all himself? He must because he hasn't met with his Jobs Council since January either. What does that say about his ability to choose people if he doesn’t seek their council? You can't learn to be a CEO 'on-the-job'. That's why governors make better President's than senators or congressman: even if they have no business experience at least they have some experience from running a state - Clinton, Reagan, etc.

Have you considered what an Obama administration would look like in it’s 2nd term? It's likely John Kerry would be tapped as Secretary of State (I have no idea why, but it would get him out of our hair here in Mass), and I'll bet $20 that the empty suit in the governor's office (Deval Patrick) will end up in the seat Kerry currently holds, or be tapped as Attorney General. This is the same guy that got fired from the Justice Department by the Clinton administration. Hold on tight because the slide into mediocrity would accelerate should Obama be re-elected.

Just a little info for ya. Two years ago during the congressional elections, America rejected Obama's policies so badly that it sent more republicans to congress then at any time in our life time.
This congress has over 40 bills before the Democratic controlled senate that would have us well on our way to recovery from this terrible economy and has not and will not even vote on these measures.
This Deocratic controlled senate has not passed a budget since Obama took office which allows Obama to spend endlessly with no controls.
16,000,000,000,000.00 and rapidly climing.
If we continue with this senate and this president, it is just a matter of time before we all lose every thing we own and hold dear to us.
This election is the single biggest election in American history!
Please vote, and tell all your friends and family to do so as well.

Enough is enough.

Most people made their minds up before the Conventions. If both parties took the millions they spent and put it into the homeless and hungry we'd see real results. Obama's speech was as predicted: pure political theater.

The Democratic party figured out long before anyone did that social networking is a way to get to voter opinion (hence why we see so many bloggers who angrily try to shut up frustrated voters with their fluff). We put in Obama with no regard for his experience or his affiliation with anti-American people and groups. Since, groups and movements have been spawned to ignite flames along social, racial, and economic lines (a prediction: the failed "Occupy Movement" will be back before elections with their iPhones recording every encounter with the hopes of finding the right "oppressor" to hold up their "99%" claim and hopefully catch one of their own getting pushed by a cop or a soldier). And we will continue to see the White House discredit Special Forces because they DARED to accuse him of putting them and their family lives at risk by leaking secrets to the media to get a political lift in the polls, so now they have a member of the SEALS as a schoolyard example of how THEY should not be trusted. "Wag the dog."

Our schools and colleges have been teaching revisionist history for over 40 years so I am not upset with "Obamapologists:" they are, on average, really smart and passionate but so easily mislead.

ENOUGH is ENOUGH.

My, how the Democratic party has changed.

My parents are retired. Are they deadbeats? They receive social security and Medicare. Shouldn't they receive these benefits. Remember that the baby boomers are retiring. The Democrats have not changed. The benefits to the poor are remarkably small.

Actually, Bush policies did lead to the meltdown and the democrats are to blame as well. It started with the dismantling of Glass Steagall under Clinton and pushed by Alan Greenspan. That made way to interstate bank mergers and we all know how greedy bankers can be. Following that, the Bush Adminsistration did a fairly good job watching what was happening, but Congress got in the way. The fed under greenspan continued to lower interest rates which led to the bubble. I would argue that when it went off, both Bush and Obama continued to fill the holes to keep the economy floating.

Lots of things are being said, to bad we can't see our leaders work together. We bad mouth them, we call them names and I am as guilty as any one. I think we could find something positive about both men. I would feel better about Mr Romney if he would produce at least 5 years of his income tax records. I am offended that a man with his income only pays 13 % income when I know of retiree's pay 15%. There is much more on both sides. We need to elect people that can cross the aisle and work to gether for the good of our people and our country. My God bless us and our beloved country.

Jerry, You are seriously wrong. Remember,-- "WE THE PEOPLE"-- not we the government? First of all Romney gives a tremendous amount of his $$$ to charity! Obama lied about their pensions in the second debate. OBAMA, not Romney, has more pension then Romney and most of it is invested in CHINA!! Fact check that if you care to. Obama has had four years to do a good job and has failed. The Benghazi,(sp.?) cover up is unbelievable and Obama, Biden, and Clinton have lied and missled the American people and the families of our dead heros. The buck stops with the COMMANDER IN CHIEF!! Obama played politics and did not want to have to admit that terrorist were still active when Obama declared they were alomost gone. Obama and his "team" lied and blamed these murders on a mob over a movie!! We "ALL" know that that was completly wrong and emails "LIVE" IN THE SITUATION ROOM WITH OBAMA "LOOKING AND LISTENING IN REAL TIME" prove this. Obama had the nerve to face the parents of these wonderful AMERICANS, and lied and blamed the attack on a video!! SHAMEFUL, DISSGRACEFUL, AND IMPEACHABLE ACTIONS. The "IN THE TANK MEDIA" doesn't oven talk about it in the news! Fox News is the only one to give the people the news that we and'-- especially the families' are entitled to hear and know the truth. I do hope the hearings will do their work! Let's hear it- you Marblehead people, who want the TRUTH to be brought out. Truth always wins. God bless us all!!

Need proof the media is in the tank for Obama? On Meet The Press this am Carly Fiorina brought up the debacle in Lybia. David Gregory quickly shut her down with the comment, "We'll get to that later." Big surprise--he never got to it!
