Volunteers to Serve Christmas Meal to Homeless at Rt. 1 Hotel

A group of volunteers will serve Christmas dinner to homeless residents who live in a Danvers hotel.

Volunteers will serve breakfast Christmas morning to 100 homeless families living Extended Stay America in Danvers.

The meal will be served from 8-11 a.m. inside two open rooms at the Route 1 hotel. The breakfast will include pancakes, fruit, coffee and juice.

Local volunteers, led by Mark Pestana, his wife Allisha Zabelski and friend Jason Russell of Ipswich are partnering with the Danvers Community Council and several local businesses, including Custom Cup Caffe, Danvers Fresh Marketplace and POS Supply Solutions in Danvers and donations from The Weathervane Restaurant in  and The Russell Orchards in Ipswich.

"This breakfast is the first of its kind," Pestana said. "The whole idea was something my wife and I put together within the last couple of weeks, and we were really encouraged by the generous response of some of the local organizations."

For years, the Danvers area has acted as host to many families from all over the state who have lost their homes and agencies working with state the Department of Health and Human Services place residents at Extended Stay if they have one or more children in their family, Pestana said.

"This will be a great way for Danvers to spread some holiday cheer to parents and kids," he said.

There are only 80 rooms at this hotel, where do they put 100 families?

Karen, good question. The Expedia listing shows 104 rooms, but that still would not leave much room for any other guests. The information here is what we received from the volunteer organizers of the breakfast.
