Will Patrick's $1.9 Billion Tax Hike Pass?

The governor's optimistic but state legislators don't sound so sure. What do you think?

Governor Deval Patrick is still bullish about his budget proposal, which will raise $1.9 billion in new revenue through an increase in the income tax, decrease in the sales tax, and various other changes to taxes, fees and deductions. But the men and women who have to pass the bill don't sound as eager to support a package many see as a politically-damaging measure.

The Boston Herald quotes several Beacon Hill legislators who sounded notes of caution to outright opposition to the budget. Those quoted cited the 1990 election losses in the wake of an income tax increase, pressure on small businesses and the higher price of gas as reasons they were skeptical. And the governor's new web tools touting proposed transportation and education projects in specific political districts hasn't done much to warm the waters, according to the Herald.

What do you think? Is the governor's budget dead on arrival, or does he have a shot at getting it passed? Would you pass this budget if you were a state senator? Does the state need the additional revenue or should it learn to live with the money it already collects? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below!

Let's stop raising taxes and show that we can live within our means. Fixing broken systems is fine but I think we are in the top 5 tax heavy states in the USA, do we need more?

We have to provide all the freeloaders with food stamps, free health care, allowances,
free phones, taxi rides, etc. We have to raise taxes on the workers so that these people can continue to live in the way that they have been accustomed, that's why.

As recently as a couple years ago, 30 states had higher taxes than Massachusetts. "Taxachusetts" doesn't exist anymore.

Patrick's proposal may be too large, but we need to do something meaningful to raise the revenue necessary to deal with our transportation and infrastructure problems. We are underfunding our infrastructure to the tune of about a billion a year, just to keep up our current level of service. This is going to eventually catch up to us and either cost a heckuva lot more or force us to reduce the quality of our roads, bridges and public transportation, costing us tons of jobs. Likely, it will be all of the above... unless we act now.

That fact about how many states pay higher taxes than us came from the Mass Budget and Policy Center. http://www.massbudget.org/report_window.php?loc=Facts07152010.html

The Mass Budget and Policy Center is a liberal think tank, and quite frankly, their information and statistical analysis will always serve to back those positions up, including Deval Patrick's proposals. Regardless of that, there is merit in the idea that Massachusetts has become a friendlier state to live in--as to tax burden-- but a bigger concern than this is that the liabilities that this state faces on a per capita basis are extremely high (and unfortunately severely unfunded) and the state also is extremely inefficient on a per capita basis as well in terms of cost of government per citizen. There was no discussion of either of these concerns by Governor Patrick in his "proposal," and until he addresses these issues, I cannot see his proposal as being serious in any way, shape or form.

Nope, not a prayer. Reps don't want to lose their cushy jobs so this guy can launch a Presidential campaign as a moonbat hero

No way! If they pass this then people should rush the state house and overthrow the government by using deadly force if necessary!

Yes, it will pass in some fashion. Our reps are not afraid of losing their jobs, never have been. The last thing they care about is the welfare of the working class. And we keep electing them. Shame on the electorate.

This is backwards. The rise in taxes to help raise revenue to pay for an aging infrastructure, especially the roads. By raising state taxes and decreasing sales tax, those from out of state that come in to MA to work, get a huge break. What about putting some toll booths on 93 and 95 for those entering the state every morning and using our roads and bridges. Works for NH.

We were all fooled when the democrats in Mass. Told us that the lottery money would be used for roads and bridges. Patrick is just doing the same thing here! Why are we shocked by another democratic lie?
He only wants to take a dollar and a quarter per hundred that we earn! Add that with the two dollars per hundred that Obama and his democratic friends crushed us with on January 1, and it's only three and a quarter per hundred less in our pay checks, and the new Obama care taxes haven't hit us yet.
Keep voting for Democrats and you'll have nothing left. But not to worry, your lazy ass neighbor will have more then he needs, payed for by you!
Welcome to socialism!

Of course it will pass. Right now we have a government that has completely uncoupled itself from the people. He will get his way, just as his buddy in Washington has, and when the next elections come the tide will change unless they continue to get the "voter turnout" (e.g., dead people and "absentee voters") they need. I just hope it's not another Bush/Cheney... please God, no... but I'd take them back in a heartbeat right now and I can't believe I'm saying that.

No need for a long response here. Patrick is a self serving dick and over 50 percent of the voters are either uneducated, cowards, takers or a combination of the three.

He never received over 50% thanks to the three way elections he was treated to. Cahill acted as straw and then got punished. Got to love Mass Dems - backstabbing jerks.

What happened to the property tax cuts he promised? Did I miss the notice of reduced rates? And, I thought the last time we supported raising taxes it was to fix the infrastructure and for the children's education ... not to mention the elderly and the extra Special Ed teachers. and for in-state tuition for children of the illeg ,,, I mean undocumented immigrants. Something is very fishy here ... can we ask for a refund?

Ya, we can ask for a refund and will get it if we vote for a republican governor and stop voting for democrates! Have we learned nothing from the damage they create on people that work and pay taxes?
But they care about the little people by giving them free handouts to keep them dependent on the government so they continue to vote democrat to keep them down permanently with no hope and freedom and independence!
It's also importent to keep racism alive and well by having quotas for people of color so that white people can have created anger toward these people created by the Democratic Party!
It's all about the power!
If they really cared about the less fortunite, they would create an environment to provide jobs for everyone so that they can have the freedom of independence.
It's all about the votes to stay in power regardless of the damage they do to the class of people they fool.

As long as there is a D next to their name, they will win elections in MA despite the awful things they are doing to us. I don't want more taxes, but fear they are coming.
