Danvers High Athletics GIRLS SOCCER Two days after taking down Marblehead in convincing fashion, the Danvers High girl’s soccer team left Salem feeling a bit unfulfilled following Thursday night’s 1-1 draw with the Witches. Despite controlling the tempo throughout, Danvers (2-0 NEC; 3-1-1 overall) was unable to finish and settled for the tie when Salem converted off a corner kick with six minutes to play. The Falcons generated eight corner kicks in the first half alone and scored with three minutes left in the half when Corey Persson headed in a cross from Alex Strangie. “We struggled tonight…

They take on No. 9 Wayland next Wednesday night at home (7 p.m.) in a first-round game with the goal of exceeding last year’s semifinal appearance. Rachel Trocchi and Rebecca Cann powered the attack against Gloucester, each scoring three goals to go …
Undeterred by the miserable weather that has dogged the region throughout the week, the St. John’s Prep track team ran away from B.C. High in Dorchester Tuesday afternoon, 77-59, to claim its second straight Catholic Conference championship. St. John’s only recorded seven first-place finishes but the Eagles’ superior depth carried the day. Their throwers outscored B.C. High, 23-4, highlighted by Scott Sheehan’s winning effort of 150-0 in the javelin. “The conditions were horrible, but he beat a pretty good kid by a foot,” said coach Ray Carey. Sean Enos added wins in both the shot put (53-9) …
The St. John’s Prep sailing team finished first in its four-team wild card qualifying event last Sunday at the Bristol (R.I.) Yacht Club to advance to this weekend’s New England Schools Sailing Association (NESSA) Team Championship Regatta on Mendum Lake in Durham, N.H., home waters for the University of New Hampshire. “We did very well and we’re excited to be going to New Englands again and to have the opportunity to compete on another lake,” said coach Bill Mackinson, whose team calls Lake Quannapowitt home. The Eagles compete in Division A of the Mass. Bay League. Experience has served the…
Outstanding play by talented underclassmen Nick Lisichenok, a freshman, and Gabe Ochonski, a sophomore, has been instrumental in leading the Danvers High boys’ tennis team to a 9-3 overall record (2-1 league). The Falcons yielded only a single point while winning three matches this week. They shut out both Bishop Fenwick and Lynn English, 5-0, sweeping each of 10 individual matches in straight sets, then took the measure of Gloucester on Thursday, 4-1. Lisichenok ran his personal record to 12-0 with three straight-set decisions while Ochonski matched him to improve to 9-2 for the year. The …

Pardon Pat Connaughton if he disputes Thomas Wolfe's dictum that you can't go home again. The Notre Dame-bound senior pitcher, an Arlington resident, did precisely that Monday morning when he fired a no-hitter against his hometown high school, leading St. John's Prep to a 5-0 win against the Spy Ponders. Connaughton – in his first start back from an ankle injury – struck out 14, walked only two and didn't allow a single ball out of the infield, leading coach Pat Yanchus to say the performance “ranks as his best without a ball [being] hit to the outfield.” Yanchus cited shortstop Justin Peluso…

Danvers didn't surrender a single set to the Witches. Senior Becca Sands posted a 6-0, 6-0 whitewash at second singles; senior Paige …
