2 Danvers Students Praised for Their Winning Fire Prevention Artwork

Here's what you need to know in Danvers today.

Today is Friday, Sept. 6. Here are five things to know today in Danvers.

  1. Eighth-grader Jordan Henderson and seventh-grader Ethan McGrath -- both students at Holten-Richmond Middle School -- got some public recognition Tuesday night for their recent wins in a statewide fire prevention art contest. Jordan and Ethan took first and second, respectively, in Essex County for their posters that sought to heighten awareness on fire safety and prevention. The contest was run by the Massachusetts Property Insurance Underwriting Association and winners were selected from each county in the state. The students received prizes for their regional wins and statewide winners were chosen in May. Fire Chief Kevin Farrell said it was the first time Danvers entered the contest. The posters are used in calendars and the state Fire Marshal's annual report. "We’re going to proudly display [the two pictures] at the fire station," he said, adding that they will be framed and hung in the lobby. He said it was actually HRMS art teacher Siobhan McDonald's idea that the two students enter the contest. She expressed her thanks and noted Danvers had the strongest showing of any fire department in the state at the awards luncheon.
  2. Friday is another early release day for the Danvers Public Schools. The high school and middle school dismiss at 12:45 p.m. and elementary schools at 1:15 p.m.
  3. The Danvers High football team is slated to open its season Friday night against Marblehead (7 p.m.).
  4. Sunday hours resume Sept. 8 at the Peabody Institute Library of Danvers. Hours will be 1-5 p.m.
  5. The Danvers School Committee has its next meeting on Monday and will be settling in at the Mills Communication Center (Room E105) at the high school. The meeting starts at 7 p.m.
