Board Observes Moment of Silence for Paul Marquis; Dominick 2nd at All-States

Here's what you need to know today in Danvers.

Today is Wednesday, Nov. 20. Here are five things to know today in Danvers.

  1. Selectmen observed a moment of silence during their meeting Tuesday night to remember former School Committee member and longtime Town Meeting member Paul Marquis, who died last Friday. He was 82. Marquis, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, was the father of Town Manager Wayne Marquis. Selectman Bill Clark said the late Marquis gave many years of "dedicated" service in town on numerous projects.
  2. There's a workshop for parents on Wednesday, "Homework Without Headaches," presented by Stuart Peskin, the director of the Dissemination Project. The free workshop will be at the Holten-Richmond Middle School cafeteria from 6:30-8 p.m. and explore the rationale behind homework as well as provide strategies to help parents with the completion and accuracy of their child's homework and include resources for assistance. Instead of a registration fee, parents are asked to bring a non-perishable food item to donate to the Danvers People to People Food Pantry. To register, contact Title I Coordinator Maria DiChiara at 978-777-4539 ext. 2441 or at mariadichiara@danvers.org.
  3. Runners at the Danvers 5K Fun Run, a weekly Wednesday event, have been collecting hundreds of pounds of food to donate to the People to People Food Pantry for Thanksgiving. The run organizers say this is the last week to donate, so bring as much food as you can with you on Wednesday. The goal is 500 pounds.
  4. Danvers High junior Catalina Dominick raced to a 2nd place finish this past Saturday in the Division 2 All-State Meet in Gardner. She was just 3 seconds behind Manchester-Essex's Olivia Lantz for a time of 16:58 on the 2.9-mile course. Senior James Bailey finished 109th in the boys' race with a time of 16:28. Also St. John's Prep sophomore Luke Bulger took 45th in the Division 1 race in a time of 15:28.
  5. Danvers High School Academy Theatre performs Shakespeare's Twelfth Night this weekend, starting Friday. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and can be purchased at the door or online.
