Christmas Tree Pickup This Saturday in Danvers

Here's what you need to know today in Danvers.

Today is Wednesday, Jan. 8. Here are five things to know today in Danvers.

  1. The Department of Public Works says Christmas tree pickup in town will be this Saturday, Jan. 11. Residents should leave their trees at the curb by 7 a.m. The DPW asks that all tinsel and ornaments be removed and trees cannot be in plastic bags.
  2. Don't forget Wednesday is an early release day at the Danvers Public Schools for staff development. Danvers High and Holten-Richmond Middle School will both be dismissed at 12:45 p.m. and elementary schools will be dismissed at 1:15 p.m. Lunch will be served.
  3. The library will be conducting some maintenance on its library catalog system this week, Tuesday through Thursday. During that time, patrons won't be able to check your library record, get a new card, pay any due fines or place a hold on an item. You will be able to look up items in the catalog though or check out or return materials. Maintenance is expected to start Tuesday around 9 p.m.
  4. The deadline to apply for admission next fall to the new regional vocational school is this Wednesday. You can find the application online here.
  5. Promotions: Several veteran Danvers police officers and firefighters will be formally sworn in to their new ranks this Thursday during a ceremony at Danvers High School. The promotions were announced this past fall. Thursday's ceremony is at 6 p.m. in the auditorium and foyer of the high school. The public is welcome to attend.
  6. The senior center is putting on a paint and sip class Thursday from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Paula Corcoran, the program coordinator, was before the Board of Selectmen Tuesday night for a one-day beer and wine license for the event. She said the class isn't just for seniors, a few baby boomers have already signed up. "It is the new thing, I wish I could [paint]," remarked Selectwoman Diane Langlais. "You don’t want to see me paint," she added, smiling. The class, taught by decorative artist and BrushStroke Designs owner Jeannette Lerner, is suited to experienced artists and beginners alike as a fun evening with friends, wine, hors d’oeuvres and painting. The painting project will be a wine glass and grapes on a 16- by 20-inch canvas. It costs $20 for members of the Friends of the Danvers Council of Aging and $35 for non-members, and includes a table easel, paint brushes, water bin, pallets, paper towels, the paint and the canvas. Advance registration required either at the senior center or via www.dcoa.org. Contact Corcoran at paula@dcoa.org or 978-762-0208.
