Danvers' Duggan Named Captain of U.S. Women's National Team

Here's what you need to know today in Danvers.

Today is Tuesday, Nov. 5. Here are five things to know today in Danvers.

  1. The U.S. Women's National Team will be completing its Bring on the World Tour and preparing for the 2014 Winter Olympics with Danvers native Meghan Duggan as team captain. USA Hockey announced announced Monday that the Olympic silver medalist was selected for the honor, which is just the latest in a number of accolades and awards in the 26-year-old Duggan's career so far. She captained the team twice before in 2008 and 2011 and has played in numerous international tournaments. She now plays for the Boston Blades. You can read more on the news here.
  2. In local sports news, the Danvers High girls' soccer club was knocked from the playoffs Monday in Wilmington, after going into double overtime with the Wildcats to suffer a 2-1 loss. The Falcons' boys play at Masconomet Tuesday (2 p.m.) and the St. John's Prep soccer club hosts Lexington Tuesday (2 p.m.).
  3. The Board of Selectmen meets Tuesday (7 p.m.) You can find the rest of the schedule of town meetings this week online here.
  4. Robin D'Antona, a nationally certified trainer of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, will be speaking to parents at Holten-Richmond Middle School on Wednesday.
  5. Marsha Coogan tells us that the Danvers High/Holten High School Class of 1961 is holding a fundraising drive to place a granite bench at the site of the grads' former high school (what is now Holten-Richmond Middle School). The bench will be engraved “Holten High Class of 1961,” similar to other benches donated by other classes. Classmates interested in contributing can make out a check payable to "Danvers High School Class of 1961" and mail to Marsha Yetman Coogan, 20 Cornell Rd., Danvers.
