Giving Garden Opens for Holiday Season Friday; Retirement Board Vacancy

Here's what you need to know today in Danvers.

Today is Friday, Nov. 22. Here are five things to know today in Danvers.

  1. The Giving Garden at the Liberty Tree Mall returns on Friday to accept donations to local charities through the holiday season. The five trees, representing five organizations, are located in the Best Buy wing of the mall. Each tree contains ornaments of specific wishes for that organization and mall shoppers can then purchase an item listed and bring it back to the Giving Garden by Dec. 20 to ensure delivery by Christmas. Gifts can also be dropped off directly at each organization. This year it's Haven from Hunger, Operation Troop Support, Salvation Army Angel Tree, Toys for Tots and Hope on Wheels (run by Hyundai Village of Danvers).
  2. Interested in serving on the Danvers Retirement Board? There's a vacancy now for the fifth member of the board. Submit a letter of interest, listing your qualifications, no later than the end of business on Nov. 29. Letters can be mailed or hand delivered to the Danvers Retirement System, 1 Sylvan St., Danvers, MA 01923 or via email to slittle@mail.danvers-ma.org. Danvers Retirement Board members are responsible for overseeing the administration of retirement benefits to more 900 active and retired public employees in town and control the assets of the Danvers Retirement System. Applicants cannot be an employee, retiree or official of the town of Danvers. The term of office runs from the date of appointment through the end of the existing term on Oct. 27, 2016.
  3. Donna Martin of Mill River Wines will be talking about selecting wines for the holidays with the North Shore Business Forum Friday morning at the Danversport Yacht Club.
  4. Danvers High School Academy Theatre performs Shakespeare's Twelfth Night this weekend, starting Friday. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and can be purchased at the door or online.
  5. The Polish Club is hosting an Over 50 couples dance on Saturday. Dance the night away to "Smokin' Joe." Admission is $10 per person.
  6. Danvers Church of the Nazarene is holding a clothing benefit sale Saturday from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. There will be gently used children and adult clothing, shoes and boots for sale for $5 or less. All proceeds will be used to create Christmas baskets for those in need in the community.
