Town to Dedicate Monument to Veterans at Thorpe School

Here's what you need to know today in Danvers.

Today is Wednesday, Nov. 6. Here are five things to know today in Danvers.

  1. The Veterans Day ceremonies in town will be a little different this year in order to dedicate a new monument at the Danvers Veterans Memorial Fields at the Thorpe School. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. at the school. The guest speaker will be retired U.S. Army Capt. Charles Gould, Commander of the Danvers American Legion Post #180 and a former Danvers resident. Those in attendance may place small American flags in the memorial wreath to honor a veteran once the service concludes.
  2. In local sports news, the Danvers High boys' soccer team was knocked from the playoffs by Masconomet, 3-0, on Tuesday. The St. John's Prep soccer club defeated visiting Lexington, 1-0, and will play the winner of Acton-Boxboro/Madison Park on Thursday.
  3. Robin D'Antona, a nationally certified trainer of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, will be speaking to parents at Holten-Richmond Middle School on Wednesday.
  4. The Liberty Tree Mall is hosting a local preliminary contest for the Sunburst Beauty Pageant on Sunday at 1 p.m. Kids age three and under and females up to age 27 are welcome to enter the pageant. The fee is $45. More details here on how to register.
  5. Marsha Coogan tells us that the Danvers High/Holten High School Class of 1961 is holding a fundraising drive to place a granite bench at the site of the grads' former high school (what is now Holten-Richmond Middle School). The bench will be engraved “Holten High Class of 1961,” similar to other benches donated by other classes. Classmates interested in contributing can make out a check payable to "Danvers High School Class of 1961" and mail to Marsha Yetman Coogan, 20 Cornell Rd., Danvers.
