Danvers Celebrates Veterans Day at Thorpe School

Town officials and local veterans will gather at the elementary school to dedicate a new monument to local veterans in addition to the annual ceremonies.

The Veterans Day ceremonies in town will be a little different this year in order to dedicate a new monument to local veterans.

The monument is over at the Danvers Veterans Memorial Fields next to the Thorpe Elementary School on Avon Road. Normally, the annual ceremony is held at the senior center.

The regular Veterans Day program, in honor of all veterans, will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday inside the school cafetorium and conclude with the dedication.

The guest speaker for the morning will be retired U.S. Army Capt. Charles Gould, Commander of Danvers American Legion Post #180 and a former Danvers resident.

The final monument was paid for with a yearlong fundraising effort by the Danvers Veterans Council and Rotary Club to install a permanent marker at the soccer and lacrosse fields at the school, which were named in honor of the town's veterans in 2010.

Those in attendance Monday morning are welcome to place small American flags in the memorial wreath to honor a veteran once the service concludes.
