Vigils, Prayer Wednesday to Reflect on Tragedy and Remember Teacher

A vigil organized by students is set for 8 p.m. outside the high school while churches in town are also inviting the community to pray and reflect.

There are a number of vigils and prayer services being held Wednesday in Danvers in the wake of the murder of Danvers High math teacher Colleen Ritzer.

A vigil organized by students via social media is now set for outside the high school by the tennis courts at 8 p.m. The school itself is still closed to the public.

Ritzer, 24, of Andover, was allegedly killed by a male student while in a bathroom inside the school. Her body was found by police in the woods behind the high school.

The suspect, charged with murder, is 14-year-old Philip Chism.

Maple Street Congregational Church opened its doors to the general community for prayer and quiet reflection Wednesday, along with Danvers Church of the Nazarene and Holy Trinity United Methodist Church.

Holy Trinity is also holding a candlelight vigil at 8 p.m.
