Why is There a Giraffe in Front of the Library?

"Celebrating the Art of Sculpture" will be on display at the Peabody Institute Library until Sept. 13.

So are you wondering why there’s a bronze-looking giraffe in mid stroll on the lawn of the Peabody Institute Library? If you look a little closer, you’ll see a menagerie of interesting looking designs spread across the front lawn and there are smaller pieces inside.

The library is actually hosting a special sculpture exhibit both indoors and outdoors this summer in cooperation with the Barn Workshop in Danvers for the 40th anniversary of the gallery.

“Celebrating the Art of Sculpture” features the work of 29 local artists and first opened at the library June 23. The exhibit will be on display until Sept. 13.

The giraffe was created by Chris Williams, by the way, and he says in an artist statement that a fascination with welding turned into a "journey of creativity." Each piece is a handmade original.

"I want the figures I create to look like they've just been caught in a moment of stillness, as if when you turn your head, they will lumber off to the woods or fly away," he said.
