Remembering Fred Abate - Boston Marathon '14
Running a marathon is like a roller coaster. You teach yourself lessons and push yourself to limits you never knew were possible.
Running for a charity like the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society for a loved one you lost to blood cancer can be explained in one word: Inspiring.
I joined Team In Training back in 2011 to help my family and I grieve the loss of a brother, a father, a son, a husband, an uncle and a friend – Fred Abate. We lost my Uncle Fred in 2010 to non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. It was among the most difficult experiences my family had ever been through. We lost a man who lifted our spirits, loved us deeply and left a mark on our hearts.
Losing someone to cancer is an extremely emotional experience for anyone. You feel so helpless. But my uncle made it known that no matter what, it was important to give back to the cause that was so close to his heart. So that’s why I got involved with Team In Training and the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society, to remember this wonderful, selfless man and deal with his loss in a positive way.
So I trained for and ran the 2013 Boston Marathon with TNT. Leading up to Marathon Monday I had the time of my life! With the help of family, friends, teammates and complete strangers I was able to raise $11,200 for blood cancer. AMAZING!
But the day was taken away from me and all of the runners on April 15th due to the tragic acts of some heartless people. This day cannot easily be put to words. But in my life I’ve learned that it’s important not to dwell on things you have no control of. It’s time to look forward. It’s time to move on. And thanks to the BAA we’ve been invited back to run again this year.
I am THRILLED to be running for this cause that is so important to me. The coaches, the volunteers and my teammates have changed my life.
SO what can you do to help?! I have set a hefty goal of surpassing $10K raised this year. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to my run. 100% of your donation will go towards treatments and research for blood cancer patients.
