Oscar Night 2014: Gowns Dazzle the Senses!

By Lisa Almeida, Heidi Nicholson, and Tara Antonucci of Bella Sera Bridal

Let’s be honest. When it comes to the Oscars, the “Red Carpet Arrivals” are what it’s all about. We may be curious about who will take home the golden statues, but the speeches are hardly necessary since the gowns do all the talking. It’s the fashion that captures headlines across the world. Twitter and Facebook were all abuzz about the hits and misses. And of course, we were standing by to weigh in with our favorites of the evening.

We have to begin with Charlize Theron because she was jaw-dropping gorgeous. She had a statuesque beauty in her dramatic black gown by Christian Dior. It was elegant, and sophisticated and just the perfect choice for this classic starlet.

Gowns with peplums were a favorite for many actors this year including Amy Adams in Gucci, Jennifer Lawrence in Dior, and Julia Roberts in Givenchy Couture. This is a trend we continue to see locally at our store with many designers – like Alyn Rose and Terani Couture - incorporating this element into this season’s hottest styles.

And while we saw some nude and white combos and some gorgeous pastels (think Lupita Nyong’o in her pale blue Prada goddess gown and Camila Alves in a pink Gabriela Cadena), there were also some stunning deeper tones like ruby red and lots of royal blue as was evidenced by a beautiful drape and twist by Alexander McQueen worn by Sandra Bullock.

Accessories, particularly statement necklaces, were doing some work this year, standing out against some very simple gown silhouettes. Theron’s bobble was said to be worth a cool 15 million! The presenters' 31-carat diamond cluster Harry Winston necklace popped against her classic black gown. Naomi Watts also went big with accessories, choosing a bold spider web Bulgari necklace.

Overall, a good fashion turnout for this year’s award season. We are excited to see how these trends will translate locally as we get ready for an exciting spring season at Bella Sera Bridal and Lorraine Roy at Bella Sera.
