Danvers Indoor Sports Plans to Build Addition for More Courts, Field

The indoor sports arena off Route 114 is growing.

Danvers Indoor Sports is looking to nearly double in size.

The indoor sports complex is requesting approvals from the town to add on 72,000 square feet to the existing building for four more basketball courts and a soccer field. Currently, the facility is used for soccer, field hockey, lacrosse, basketball, flag football, volleyball, badminton, pickleball and kickball.

Local attorney Nancy McCann, who is representing the company, said the new addition will connect to the existing facility at 150R Andover St. and roughly double its size. The standing building is 88,000 square feet.

The complex is owned and operated by Kelly Cragg and McCann says he's experienced a lot of success since opening the new state-of-the-art complex two years ago -- the expansion is to meet a growing demand.

In addition to North Shore sports teams of all ages making use of the indoor fields and training, local senior programs, schools programs and other groups regularly utilize the facility as well.

The Zoning Board of Appeals granted a use variance for the project earlier this month -- the site is located in a commercial area that's primarily zoned for retail. McCann said the ZBA had likewise granted a variance for the existing complex.

She said she'll be filing with the Planning Board and Conservation Commission as well in the coming weeks.

The goal is to break ground before the end of the year, McCann said. She didn't have a definite timeline for completion of the project, but said next spring is likely.

Looking at the building from the access road (next to Carter's Diamonds), the addition would be located to the right of the existing entrance.
