Getting Fresh at the Marketplace

From soup to nuts, Danvers Fresh Marketplace has everything, and then some.

As the newcomer to the neighborhood, Dave Moreno has settled in nicely at his 17 Elm St. locale, where the former Murphy’s Fruit Mart supplied produce to Danvers locals for over 40 years. His vegetable and fruit shop has become a staple here, just off of the square, and customers have been receptive to the new establishment.

opened its doors on April Fool’s Day 2010, but the savings are no joke. Having been in the retail industry for over 30 years, Moreno believes in passing on savings to his customers. This practice has quickly earned him their loyalty and trust -- crucial ingredients for a small business to survive in the prevailing economy.

“One thing we never experience is complaints,” he says. “We have a lot of repeat customers, especially around lunchtime, and the salad bar and deli counter do really well.”

When Moreno purchased the market he knew he would need a loyal staff to help him run the business, as he works night shifts at a Chelsea produce market. With Manager Andrea Harry, her mother Sue Harry and cashier Marian Ciruolo he knew he had a great team.

“Everyone who works here knows how to do everything, they all know how to cut the meat, run the register, fill the salad bar,” he explains. “They are multi-talented.”

How does he manage to run the store while working overnight full-time? "A lot of Red Bull and Turbo," Moreno chuckles. "I don't get a lot of sleep!"

The market offers much more than fresh and organic produce to its customers, from eggs and potato salad, hummus and nuts, to the deli counter stocked with Boar’s head meats and cheeses. There are daily sandwich specials featuring a vast array of breads and wraps, all made to order. The market also takes special orders on platters and fruit baskets for every occasion and will deliver.

“We’re expanding our deli counter, so we’ll be able to offer more meats,” Moreno promises. “Hopefully in the next month or so.”

Quality product is the key objective for Moreno and says he will not lower his standards for the sake of a sale.

“Where my working at a produce market comes in is I’m able to offer sales to my customers as it comes in,” he explains.  “But we won't put out distressed product. That doesn’t help anybody for it to go bad as soon as...(the customer) get it home.”

For right now, the best deal in town are the Sunday sales, which Moreno tries to offer up weekly, depending on the availability and prices of the produce. This week's specials are on Boar’s Head Turkey Breast and vidalia onions.

As for future sales, Moreno grins: “We’ll see what we get tomorrow!”
