'Hire a Veteran Month': Regional Job Fair This Week in Danvers
Several area employers, as well as state and federal agencies, will be participating in a job fair for veterans and the community Nov. 14 at the Peabody Institute Library of Danvers.
In Massachusetts, the month of November is being dedicated to matching up the Bay State's skilled and hard-working veterans with jobs.
Gov. Deval Patrick recently declared November as "Hire a Veteran Month" during which his administration would specifically partner with regional workforce agencies to hold a statewide series of events, career fairs and training sessions to assist veterans in the transition to civilian life and long-term employment.
The North Shore Career Center is holding one such career fair this week at the Peabody Institute Library of Danvers. The fair runs Thursday from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. and is open to the general community as well. The library is located at 15 Sylvan St. in Danvers.
The first hour (10-11 a.m.) will be open to veterans while the public is welcome to attend between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Parking available at the library and at the municipal parking lot across from Town Hall.
The North Shore Career Center says the available jobs range from U.S. Border patrol agents and security guards to cable installers, car mechanics, accountants, nurses, grant writers and counselors.

- National Tire & Battery
- Northeast Behavioral Health
- Resource Connection, Inc.
- Spaulding Rehabilitation North Shore
- U.S. Customs & Border Patrol
- US Foodservice
“It is imperative that we honor the brave men and women who have served our country by giving them the resources to find good jobs at good wages,” said Patrick. “By working with employers and providing training for the jobs that are open, we will grow opportunity for our veterans and strengthen our economy.
The November push is in addition to ongoing efforts by the state to place veterans in jobs, including manufacturing partnerships and mentoring programs. Also, veterans receive priority service at any of the 32 One-Stop Career Centers in the state and at least one staff person at each site is dedicated to assist veteran clients.
As part of the latest initiative, Patrick has also more than doubled cash grants available to employers who hire Massachusetts veterans through the state’s Hiring Incentive Training Grant program. Any company that contributes to the Massachusetts Workforce Training Fund are encouraged to apply.
Eligible employers can apply for grants of $5,000 for each new hire who meets the program requirements and receive up to $75,000 each calendar year.
An informational session and technical assistance on how to obtain benefits through the GI Bill will also be held Nov. 20 at the North Shore Career Center in Lynn, 181 Union St. The event runs 1-3 p.m. and lunch will be provided.
