'Twas a Cake War in Danvers and the Screamery Hits Salem

A round up of North Shore restaurant and food news.

When you're looking for a night out and a break from cooking, you might want to know what's new not only where you live, but also in other North Shore communities.

Here's our round up of the area's latest food news:

Danvers

Cakes for Occasions hosted its first-ever Cake War last Saturday between five aspiring cake decorators. The area high school seniors had three hours to try out their skills on a three-tiered cake. The winner was due to receive a college scholarship and dessert for her Senior Class Up All Night event. Online voting ran through Thursday via Facebook...

Peabody

...and it was Peabody's Kimberly Sousa who was victorious in the battle of cake decorating skills. The high school senior garnered the most votes from fans via "Likes" on Facebook.

Lynnfield and Wakefield

Lots of food news recently in Lynnfield and Wakefield. Slice Pizza has reopened after a 9-month renovation. Meanwhile renovations are just set to begin at Kernwood Liquors. The plan is to make the packie more upscale. And that recently reopened Route 1 landmark, The Ship, has the green light to add entertainment like maybe a piano player or violinist.

Beverly

There's sweet news out of the Garden City — Winfrey's has brought their famous chocolate and candies to Cabot Street. And the new location isn't just for retail. The facility will soon open a production area adjacent to the store.

Andover

The town's newest Asian restaurant, One Thong Chai, is scheduled to have opened by the time you're reading this. It's a new outpost of Thai restaurant, which has a first location in Fitchburg.

Marblehead

Restaurants can live or die on whether they get the right kind of booze license. That's why it's such good news for Tex-Mex fans that Marblehead's Casa Corona just got a full liquor license. Before, they had only a BYOB license.

North Andover

It's something we hear a lot in the towns we cover — "Will our town be getting a Trader Joe's?" The grocer often leads the list when we ask residents what store they'd like to see come to town. Well, our intrepid editor in North Andover has uncovered how Trader Joe's makes its corporate decisions about where they'll go next. But bad news for North Andover. They almost certainly will never, ever come to North Andover.

Salem

In the Witch City, restaurants are always closing and opening. The city's newest ice cream shop, the Salem Screamery, recently opened in the old Ben & Jerry's space on Washington. Meanwhile, just around the corner, the upscale 43 Church officially closed.
