Welcome to “5 Things,” your daily resource for community events, happenings in town and other little tidbits of information. Here are five things you need to know on Friday, Jan. 3.

1. Warmer: The temperature should get above freezing at some point on Friday, but it will be windier than it was on Thursday so it may not feel much warmer.

2. Heroes: Friday is the deadline to submit nominations for this year’s American Red Cross Heroes Among Us awards. The 11th Annual Community Heroes Breakfast on will happen on Thursday, March 21 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Boston North Shore. There are six different hero categories: enduring hero, community hero, first responder hero, youth hero, education hero and healthcare hero. The nomination form can be found online.

3. Cookies: It’s Girl Scout cookie season, and you have a chance on Saturday to pick up a few boxes. Girls from Troop 63181 will be selling cookies at McKinnon’s Market from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Each box is $4.

4. Dunkin Donuts: Win a $50 gift card to Dunkin Donuts by following the chain on Twitter and answering their questions. Several times a day, they will tweet out a sentence with a missing word, Tweet back the answers and be entered for a chance to win of five gift cards each day through Sunday.
