Community Remembers Karen Martin with 9/11 Commemoration

As the entire country remembers the fallen victims of September 11 on the upcoming 10-year-anniversary, Danvers resident Karen Martin, lead flight attendant on the American Airlines Flight 11, will be honored in a community commemoration beginning at 9 a.m. in Danvers Square. 

The event, organized by Jim George, alongside Dick Moody, Capt. Conrad and the , will be a procession through town, leading up to the Fire Department 9/11 Tribute at 10 a.m. 

George said he used to see Martin in a coffee shop in the square and knew members of her family. He organized the first tribute to Martin on the five year anniversary, and hopes to see even more people this year. "People should be out there," he said. "She deserves it."

Every Saturday afternoon George can be found fundraising for Operation Troop Support in the square. His mission started about eight years ago, when he and his son were selling items at a flea market and were asked if they would give a discount if it was for the troops. George didn't just give a discount; he gave his items free of charge. 

He then went to Operation Troop Support and volunteered to fundraise in the square for a few days. "Seven years later, I'm still there," he said. "It's a passion for me now."

The "" will be held on the 10-year anniversary at 9 a.m. The event will start at North Putnam St. and Maple St. Town Manager Wayne Marquis, the, , and will all be in the procession.
