Maple Glazed Salmon For Alkaline Health

I had thought I heard it all, but it turns out alkaline balance is yet another important element to good health.

I have never seen so many people sick with the flu, or sinus infections, or just plain run of the mill colds as I have seen this month. With so much sickness around I have been making a concerted effort to get healthy foods into my family.

A trip to Trader Joes proved to be fruitful. My kids have now been introduced to real oatmeal, the steel cut oats they've never seen before, and it's all for the cause: we must stay healthy, we just have no time for illness! I even purchased a bag of roasted flax seeds, high in omega 3s and fiber, which will be finding their way into everything for the foreseeable future. When I get on a health kick, nobody is safe.

This was all a great start, but we are a real meat and potatoes family, and I knew I had to find tasty but healthy dinner ideas. When I asked around it didnt take any time at all to figure out that everyone I know is on some sort of diet. Whether they are rocking Weight Watchers, The South Beach Diet or this new and super trendy Paleo Diet, otherwise known as the caveman diet, they were happy to direct me to plenty of health-filled options. Then someone mentioned the Alkaline Diet, and it caused me pause. What the heck is the Alkaline Diet? I thought I'd heard it all, but this was all news to me-so I googled it.

According to the Better Bones website, little you do actively or nutritionally matters more than improving your acid-alkaline balance. Dr. Susan E. Brown, PHD wrote, “Most of the food we eat have the potential to alter our pH. When digested, some foods leave acidic by-products in the body (acid-forming foods); others leave alkaline by-products (alkaline-forming foods).

Acid-forming foods include most high-protein foods, such as meat, fish, eggs, and most legumes (beans and peas, except lentils, which are alkaline-forming). Sugar, coffee, alcohol, and most grains are also acid-forming. Alkaline-forming foods include nearly all vegetables and fruits, many nuts and seeds, and spices.”

If your internal PH is off, there can be very real consequences to your health, from weight gain, to aches and pains in the joints, gastro-intestinal issues, bad complexion and even bone loss. It turns out PH in the stomach is extremely important to a persons overall well being. As convinced as ever that we needed to try to achieve more balance in our diet, I took a look at the sample menu offered on the website.

Granted it looked a little basic, but with the right combination of fresh ingredients and spices, I was feeling up to the challenge of taking on the Alkaline Diet for a night. I had picked up Maple Agave Syrup and organic Trader Joe's Soy Sauce during my shopping trip, so I decided to prepare fresh salmon with a soy maple glaze; amazingly I found a recipe for exactly what I wanted to do online at allrecipes.

Served simply with a little cranberry brown rice and a side of fresh arugula, dressed with a citrus vinaigrette and freshly sliced avocados, this was a deliciously simple meal. Perfect dish for the perfect balance. Enjoy!

Maple Salmon

  • 1/4 cup maple syrup (I used the Maple/Agave Syrup)
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic salt (I prefer garlic powder, less sodium that way!)
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 pound salmon


Directions

  1. In a small bowl, mix the maple syrup, soy sauce, garlic, garlic salt, and pepper.
  2. Place salmon in a shallow glass baking dish, and coat with the maple syrup mixture. Cover the dish, and marinate salmon in the refrigerator 30 minutes, turning once.
  3. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
  4. Place the baking dish in the preheated oven, and bake salmon uncovered 20 minutes, or until easily flaked with a fork

I always, always broil salmon-but this recipe was GREAT, in that it was flavorful, and the timing and temperature were right on. We loved it!
