Percussion and World Music Ensembles

Legendary drummer Fred Buda will be honored at the December 9 concert of the Salem State University Percussion Ensemble. The concert will feature the premier of RAD: Concerto for Drumset, by the ensemble's director Abe Finch. The piece features music student and Newburyport resident PJ Holaday. The concert takes place in the Recital Hall at 7:30 pm.

"Fred Buda has inspired countless musicians throughout his career as a performer and teacher," notes Finch. "The time and wisdom he has shared with percussionists, in particular, is immeasurable. We're thrilled to have him join us on December 9 for this special evening."

Buda was the drum set player for the Boston Pops for more than thirty-five years and performed under the baton of Arthur Fiedler, John Williams, Keith Lockhart and countless guest conductors. An alumnus of the Herb Pomeroy Big Band, he leads the Jazz Pops All-Stars Ensemble and the Jazz Pops Swing Ensemble. He performs throughout the region with his Fred Buda Quintet.

The concert also includes a performance by the university's World Music Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Peter Kvetko. They will present a program that includes Shona music from Zimbabwe and Hindustani music from India.

Admission to the concert is free, although donations at the door to support scholarships for music majors are welcome. The Recital Hall is located in the Central Campus academic building at 71 Loring Ave. Concertgoers may park in the lot at Central Campus.
