Unless you have the incredible hindsight of columnist Laura Hinds, sometimes it's hard to remember what past Christmases looked, felt, and even smelled like.

So, for the week leading up to Christmas, we've done our research and are providing a daily look back at what Christmas in Onion Town was like, starting with sixty years ago, 1951, and ending with twenty years ago, 1991.

  • The Danvers Garden Club hosted a Door Decorating Contest open to all Danvers residents. The contestants had to use fresh greens, but could include ribbons, cones and ornaments. The top three winners received prizes. 
  • Downtown merchants said they were doing "better than most expected" during the holiday season, some noting it was much better than the previous year.
  • The Danvers Herald asked eight kids what they wanted for Christmas. The list included: a Game Genie for Nintendo, a 10-speed bike, a bug box, super Nintendo, Sega Genisis, Books, 'all the Quints stuff,' and 'Bigfoot. It's a truck, a real bigger one than all the other trucks.'
  • Fleet Bank kicked off a holiday project called "Stockings of Joy" for the less fortunate members of the Danvers community. Customers and employees at the were encouraged to take a stocking home, fill it, and return it to the bank. 
  • Sweets in Topsfield hosted two Kids Only Shopping Night. Parents would drop of their children with a list, and the staff helped them to pick out items for their family and friends.
