Kidnap Victim, Being Held by Alleged 'John,' Found at Comfort Inn

A woman being held against her will for five days after being kidnapped in Connecticut broke away on Thursday and called police.

A Salem man is being held without bail after he allegedly kidnapped a woman in Connecticut and brought her back to Danvers to work against her will as a prostitute.

James “Sonny” Morse, 38, of 72 Highland Ave., Salem faces charges of attempted murder, kidnapping, assault and battery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, resisting arrest, deriving support from prostitution and detaining or drugging a person in a brothel.

After his arraignment on Friday at , Judge Matthew Nestor ordered Morse held without bail at Middleton Jail. He is scheduled for a dangerousness hearing on Tuesday.

It started on Sunday when police said that Morse allegedly approached a 26-year-old woman who was walking down a street in Stamford, Conn. He told the woman that he had money and the victim offered to clean his house.

Morse allegedly had two other women with him that he runs an escort service and said they were working for him. Those two women are not facing charges. She told the victim she could not leave.

Morse allegedly took the victim at first to a hotel in Stamford and then drove to another hotel in Providence, R.I. the next day. On the drive there Morse allegedly told the victim that he had a gun.

They were in Providence for two days and on Wednesday drove to Danvers, where they checked in at .

That’s when Morse actually left with one of the other women that was working him, saying that they needed to go to New York for a court date for one of the women. But the victim stayed in the Danvers hotel room with the other women and an ad for her was placed on backpage.com that lead to “relations” with 10 men, the victim told police.

After returning from New York early Thursday morning, Morse allegedly punched her, used a pillow to try to suffocate her and hit her with a clothes hanger. Police also alleged that he forced her to strip naked and whip her with a belt. Not long after returning from New York, he checked into another room with one of the other women. When he left the room and the women who was left in the room with her fell asleep at about 10 a.m. on Thursday, the victim went down to the front desk at the hotel and asked them to call police

Officer Jarod Waterman arrived and heard the victim’s story of being kidnapped in Connecticut and being brought to Danvers. A records check found that the woman had been reported missing in Connecticut.

Waterman called for backup and went to the hotel room - with a maintenance worker who had a key  - where Morse was allegedly staying. At first the maintenance worker told Morse, through the door, that he needed to get in because of a maintenance issue. When there was no response, they used the key to open the door but the interior lock was being used. Along with Officer Adam French, Officer Derek Colella and Detective Sgt. William Carleton, they told Morse that it was the , they had a warrant for his arrest and forced open the door.

Morse had two outstanding warrants, for malicious destruction of property from both Brockton and Lynn district courts.

After a struggle where Morse allegedly tried to tuck his hands under himself as he moved toward the bed, he was arrested. After the arrest, “large amounts of cash” fell to the floor. Police said they recovered $6,453 in cash from the room.

The woman staying in the room with him was found naked and wrapped in a blanket.

In addition to the cash, police also seized 5.3 grams of marijuana, a cell phone, two laptop computers from Morse.

@Andrew S Browning I have no idea where u read anything that had to do with meth you missed out on the fact that this man had women working as prostitutes for him forget the marijuana for a sec this man forced this young woman kidnapped her and beat her inorder to make money off her I mean really he is not a John He is a real life pimp nothing like what we imagine or what they show in movies this is real life & this is happening everyday, I only pray that they keep his ass in prison for a very, very long time. Redemption is the word that comes to mind when I think of all the young girls & women who are recruited, lied too promised a good life that they may never come to know all a facade for the gain of blood money, money these ladies have shed their worth stripped away at their radiance no more real smiles,no more glitter just dull & worn true heart breaking pain hiding behind the make-up, this is very dear to my heart because I am a Survivor of CSEC, I was a teen prostitute & I survived being in the hands of this man! Sonny for ya Money, how about that, God is Good! Finally they got you

Yikes. My comment simply meant that those involved in these rings very often if not always use hard drugs. Pimps and Hard drugs go together like Cheese and Crackers. I think you are vastly reading into a simple comment and its sparked a little tirade. My point was that there was a long time before the police gained entry and Im thinking he flushed a bunch of other crap down the toilet. That is all.

@Andrew S Browning yes you are absolutely wright about drugs and pimps I now understand the point you now have clearly made which was not clear in your first blog, and yes your comment did bother me for the simple fact that drugs wasn't the factor it was the act of this man who I must say I know & knew on a persnal level for 3yrs of my life I endured nothing but trauma,& had a child with him so reading this yes has brought back some painful memories I had long buried although today I now work as a Survivor Mentor working closely with young at risk girls of CSEC through a non-profit organization My Life My Choice, I now empower young women & tell my life experience my story of srvival I do apologize if I went in hard on you but this is a very taboo topic that people don't really know too much of & should really get educated. I just never thought this day would come but finally I feel GREAT!
