Peabody Woman Arrested for Attacking, Spitting at Officer

Police say one female was refused a drink by bar staff because she was already apparently intoxicated and then the situation got violent when an officer located the vehicle across the street.

Danvers police arrested a Peabody woman and issued a court summons to an underage Ipswich female after an incident at Applebee's around midnight on Sunday.

Police spokesman Sgt. Robert Bettencourt said officers were initially called to the restaurant by staff who had refused to serve a drink to a female customer at the bar who appeared intoxicated.

The female then left the restaurant and drove off in a vehicle, but was soon located by Officer John Melto across Endicott Street in the parking lot at Wendy's. The 20-year-old Ipswich female was then issued a summons for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Bettencourt said there was a female passenger in the vehicle, however, and she became uncooperative and fought with Melto, spitting at him in the course of the altercation.

Cassandra Benedict, 21, of 271 Lynn St., Peabody, was then arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and assault and battery on a police officer.
