Police Identify Victims in Sunday Night Crash

According to reports, at 7:59 p.m. Sunday, troopers responded to reports of a single-car crash on Route 128 Southbound at Route 35.

Reginaldo Dasilva Souza, 30, of Peabody, was pronounced dead on the scene, police said. from State Police last night stated Souza was from Beverly.

Souza's passenger, Sidney Gomes Dasilva, 37, of Peabody, suffered serious injuries and was Medflighted to Mass General Hospital.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Robert Noonan, with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, indicated that a 1991 Honda Accord occupied by the two victims was traveling south on Route 128 at a high rate of speed when it struck the guardrail in the vicinity of Route 35.

The Accord then veered across two lanes and struck a jersey barrier, and then continued onto a ramp to Route 35, then left the roadway and struck two other jersey barriers. The impact knocked the jersey barriers onto their side and redirected the Honda, causing it to flip over and come to rest on its roof.

State Police said Souza was wearing his seatbelt; his passenger, Dasilva, was not.

Police are still investigating the accident, stating preliminary evidence suggests that excessive speed was a factor, and troopers are additionally investigating whether alcohol was a factor.
