UPDATED: SUV Driver That Snapped Utility Pole Allegedly Drunk

The driver of a Mercedes sport utility vehicle that smashed through an utility pole early Friday morning on Elliott Street was allegedly drunk, according to State Police.

Michael Enes Sr., 62, of 7 Elm Top Lane in Beverly, faces charges of driving under the influence of liquor, marked lanes violation and operating to endanger, according to State Trooper Nicole Morrell.

Enes' sport utility vehicle rolled over and crashed on Elliott Street at about 2:40 a.m. on Friday. Video by WHDH-TV show the damage to the vehicle and crash aftermath, that left a pole snapped in half and dangling over the street.

The news station said that the driver had to be removed from the car and taken to the hospital.

Morrell said Enes was taken by ambulance to Beverly Hospital with non life-threatening injuries. Nobody else was in the vehicle.

Enes was also involved in a hit-and-run accident on Route 128 just a few minutes earlier, WHDH reported.

The crash hapenned on Route 128 northbound just before the Route 62 exit where another vehicle was rear-ended.

Since the initial crash on Route 128 was already under investigation by State Police, they also handled the investigation of the Elliott Street crash, said Danvers Police Capt. Patrick Ambrose.

"They took over the investigation," he said.

The snapped pole was on the south side of Elliott Street, between Garfield Avenue and Bradley Road. Some wires were hanging low from the pole on Friday morning, as Danvers Electric Light crews and Comcast crews worked to replace the pole and move the wires on to the new pole.
