Danvers Officials Tour Summer Maintenance Projects In Town's Public Schools

On Wednesday town officials were guided through the schools' maintenance projects that were completed over the summer.

On Wednesday, Aug. 31, town officials including Town Manager Wayne Marquis, Superintendent Lisa Dana, and Chairman of the Board of Selectmen Dan Bennett, attended a two-hour tour of the maintenance projects that took place over the summer.

Led by Town Director of Operations Bob Lee, DPW Director David Lane, and Sr. Custodian Maintenance Foreman Bruce Esty, the tour began at the Dunn Wing of , and made its way to Thorpe and Highlands Elementary before concluding at Holten-Richmond Middle School.

According to Lee, each year there is annual preventative maintenance that takes place over the summer to ensure that the schools are ready for the beginning of the academic year, "in addition to standard cleaning." This includes inspections of the roofing, plumbing, emergency lighting, fire extinguishers, and boiler rooms at each school.

This year's contracted school projects that were highlighted on the tour included:

  • Stair Tread Replacement
  • Heat Pipe Repairs
  • Magnetic Door Hold Open Devices

  • Exterior Brick Sealing
  • Boiler Repairs

  • Flooring in four classrooms

  • Paint Cupola

All Schools:

  • Energy Conservation Improvements
  • Install Ceiling Projector Outlets in five classrooms of each school.

Lee described the HVAC changes that were installed throughout the schools are "major improvements," noting that they are not only more energy efficient, but also quieter and separate units, so if there is an issue with one it will not affect the entire building.

This past year, each school's PAC had a major fundraising priority throughout the year to supply new Smart Boards to each of the seven schools. At Thorpe Elementary there are seven installed smart boards, at approximately $15,000.

Due to the high school construction project, there were no maintenance projects in the Dunn Wing taking place this summer. Three weeks ago,

Some final cleaning and maintenance projects are still being completed before on Sept 7, but according to Lee, "the schools are in good shape."
