Former Marine to Challenge Tierney in Democratic Primary

The longtime Congressman is being challenged by a political newcomer.

This story was reported by North Andover Patch Editor Bryan McGonigle.

While you may have been wondering who the next Republican will be to take on Congressman John Tierney in November 2014, it appears he has a challenge from his own party before then.

The Boston Globe is reporting that Marblehead Native Seth Moulton, a former Marine and North Shore anti-obesity start-up founder, has announced he will run in the 2014 Democratic Primary against Tierney for the state's 6th District congressional seat.

The Globe also reports that several Democratic operatives are already onboard to help him.

First elected in 1996, Tierney narrowly defeated Republican former Senate Minority Leader Richard Tisei in 2012. Before then, he defeated Boxford attorney Bill Hudak in 2010.

A legal scandal involving his brother-in-law's illegal offshore gambling operation has plagued Tierney in these past two elections. And in 2012, a group of Democrats calling themselves Democrats for Tisei campaigned for Tisei.

Moulton had initially mulled running against Tierney late in the race last fall after moving back to Massachusetts.
