Hazardous Wastes Are All Around Your Home, Get Rid of 'Em Saturday

The town's annual Household Hazardous Waste Day is Oct. 5 from 8 a.m. - noon at the town transfer station.

It's that time of year again -- dispose of hazardous materials or chemicals around your home at the town transfer station.

Household Hazardous Waste Day will run 8 a.m. - noon on Saturday at the transfer station off East Coast Road with Clean Harbors as the contractor. The event is for Danvers residents only and ID is required.

No commercial waste will be accepted -- commercial vehicles will be turned away -- but residents are welcome to drop off fertilizers, pesticides, pool chemicals, art supplies, photography chemicals, anti-freeze, household cleaners, gasoline, drain cleaner, paints and stains (oil-based only, no latex) and the like.

There are a few items that won't be accepted Saturday, such as car tires, batteries or fluorescent bulbs. Those can be dropped off during regular business hours at the transfer station.

The town also says it won't accept electronics because those are picked up curbside with bulk item stickers and can also be dropped off at an upcoming recycling event (Nov. 2-3) at Danvers High School.

As for that latex paint, it can be dried out with cat litter or paint hardener and discarded at the transfer station during normal business hours.
