Both candidates the 13th Essex District in the state House of Representatives, representing Danvers, got their votes in early on Tuesday morning.
State Rep. Ted Speliotis (D-Danvers) voted at about 8 a.m. in precinct 3 at the Thorpe Elementary School. He was accompanied by his wife, June and daughter Ashley.
Later, Republican challenger Dan Bennett voted in precinct 1 at the Holten-Richmond Middle School at about 9:30 a.m. He was accompanied by several relatives, including his wife Janet and grandchild Ava.
Both candidates are locked in a battle for the seat, which in addition to Danvers includes three precincts in West Peabody and about half of Middleton. Speliotis is seeking his ninth straight term representing the district.
It is a rematch of the 2010 election for the same seat, when Speliotis defeated Bennett, who is also on the Danvers Board of Selectmen, by just less than 4 percentage points, or about 500 votes out of more than 16,000 that were cast.
