Volunteers Needed to Help Flag Veterans' Graves

Volunteers still needed to help place flags on veterans' graves at Walnut Grove Cemetery on Sylvan Street and St. Mary's Cemetery across the street.

Danvers Veterans Affairs Director Peter Mirandi will be at tonight, rain or shine, to hand out flags for volunteers to place on veterans’ graves.

The gravestones will be marked in preparation for Memorial Day ceremonies on May 30. Mirandi says the cemetery is home to the largest amount of veterans’ graves in town, likely hundreds, which is why he needs as many volunteers as he can get.

Anyone interested in volunteering for the evening should meet at 6 p.m. at the administration building of the cemetery, located just inside the main entrance off Sylvan Street.

Mirandi said he will be there handing out flags and directing groups to different areas of the cemetery. He plans to include veterans’ graves across the street at as well in this evening’s efforts.

As for the other gravesites around town, they will be flagged by other groups of volunteers. Mirandi said the Girl Scouts would be placing flags at St. Mary of the Annunciation Cemetery on Hobart Street.

Anyone who notices a veteran’s grave missing a flag after May 26 should go to and pick a flag up from Mirandi’s office, which is located on the second floor at 1 Sylvan St. There are a limited amount of flags available.
