Security Measures to Expect at Plains Park for the Fireworks

Here's what to expect is you're planning on attending the annual Danvers Family Festival fireworks show at Plains Park on July 3.

As the big day nears, Danvers police continue to remind residents of the numerous stipulations that are part of heightened security measures this year for the fireworks show on July 3.

All those planning to attend the show at Plains Park will be subject to screening and items carried into the park will be checked and tagged as well.

In addition to the screening measures, other rules in effect Wednesday involve the change of hours the park is open to the public, beverage policies, street closures, bag policies, parking and more.

“We would like to reinforce the 'If You See Something - Say Something' program created by the Department of Homeland Security, which encourages citizens reporting of suspicious activity,” said Police Chief Neil Ouellette in an automated notice sent out Monday.

Danvers officials say the Boston Marathon bombing certainly prompted city and town officials everywhere to incorporate greater security measures when dealing with large crowds at outdoor events.

Officers on security detail at limited entry points to Plains Park will screen every individual as well as all personal articles. Police suggest those planning to attend bring as few items as possible to speed up the process.

No alcoholic beverages will be allowed into the park, and backpacks or coolers are prohibited as well. Diaper bags, strollers and purses, however, will be allowed. All non-alcoholic beverages or foot items must be placed in clear plastic bags and will be tagged.

Bicycles, skateboards and pets will not be allowed inside the park, except for service dogs.

A temporary security fence will be erected around Plains Park, which will not open to the public until 4 p.m. on July 3.

Once the fireworks show begins at 9:30 p.m. and the lights are turned off, no further access will be allowed into the park.
