Local Eats: What's New to the Area?

Welcome to our round up of area restaurant and food news.

We know Danvers residents don’t just stay in Danvers when they want a night out and a break from cooking.

Restaurant comings and goings, new business and the best dishes and recipes are among the items that have appeared on area Patch sites over the past month.

Below is a look at the restaurant and food stories local Patch sites have covered over the past month. Read through our round up for the latest food news in the area.


. In February, 130 Wenham voters met in a Special Town Meeting  for a “pouring license” for the Tea House, which . It is , whose owner John Keohane sought a pouring license as part of his takeover of the operation. On May 8, the bill was referred to the Senate Committee on Bills in the Third Reading. The bill has been “fast-tracked” and still needs the approval of the House of Representatives and the signature of Gov. Deval Patrick before alcohol can be poured at the Tea House.

The frozen yogurt company Pinkberry – somewhat unknown in these parts but a growing (and popular) company that started seven years ago in California –is now in North Beverly,  

No new information has come out about the Black Cow in Hamilton, since 


Peabody's newest restaurant has been creating a buzz for years really, with fans of the original Salem establishment closely following the  ever since it was first announced two summers ago.

And now those fans' long-suffering is at an end --


The North Shore Mall food court will have a new tenant in June. 


The same man who brought Orange Leaf to Andover will be opening at the corner of Lafayette and New Derby streets. Pierre received unanimous support from the Licensing Board, which granted him a Common Victuallers License to operate from the Lafayette Street location, which was formerly the site of West Coast Video

If you were a fan of the Upper Crust, , we have some good news. If you're also fan of the , we have even better news. The Gulu family has plans to bring pizza back to Upper Crust with the Flying Saucer Pizza Company, a brand new gourmet pizza place scheduled to land by the summer. 


. Life Alive opened its doors this month. The organic oasis has other locations in Cambridge and Lowell. Marblehead native Heidi Feinstein owns the Salem restaurant.


After a brief hiatus, Salem’s Cafe Valverde is back open. Welcome back!

Howling Wolf in Salem has been getting quite the press lately. Channel 5's Chronicle will be filming at the restaurant from noon to 2 p.m. today.  Speaking of the Wolf, check out their recent Phantom Gourmet piece on YouTube here.


 The new flavors include introductions to the Hood Classic and New England Creamery Ice Cream lines as well as new Red Sox Novelties and Ice Cream Sandwich items. Hood's New England Creamery flavors continue the company's tradition of paying homage to its New England roots with locally inspired premium flavors such as Down East Double Fudge Brownie and Mt. Washington Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup. The new ice cream flavors are available in stores now, with the exception of New England Creamery Limited Edition Whoopie Pie, which makes its debut in June.


HP Hood and Brigham’s Ice Cream will serve 2,400 gallons of ice cream at . One hundred percent of the ice cream, labor and scoopers are donated.


The bakery is being opened in the Washington Street space formerly occupied by the Sea Gull Gift Shop by owners Jocelyn Flowers; her husband, Chad Flowers; and her father, Lynn Weekley.

Earlier this spring, Jocelyn Flowers said the trio was hoping Captn's would be "an old-school bakery" and added that she plans on offering a wide variety of baked goods, including artisan bread, cakes, cookies, cupcakes and brownies.


 and she said the response from the community has been excellent. The shelves of the candy store, located at 152 Washington St., are already stocked with an assortment of dessert and cake pops, flavored popcorns, penny candy, organic candy, vegan candy, sugar-free candy, pre-packaged bags of assorted candies, brownies, fudge and cookies.


Marblehead’s restaurant scene is heating up. 


. Felix Bracamontes will be opening Marblehead's new authentic Mexican restaurant with his brother, Jose Bracamontes, who spent five years working as a chef at Mexico Lindo in Melrose.


Marblehead will join Andover, Tewksbury, Reading and Salem is getting an Orange Leaf Yogurt this summer. It is suppose to open mid-June.

Also in the works for Marblehead this summer – the re-opening of 5 Corners Kitchen and Just Fabulous! 


Swampscott will have a new place to cool off this summer. 


 The applicants, Nam Nguyen and Tho Thi Lam-Nguyen, want a permit to renovate the building, formerly occupied by an insurance company and law firm. The restaurant would seat 61 diners inside and 20 outside.

Opposition came from several board members who said an Asian-themed exterior would not be appropriate for the neighborhood.


  Turner's is interested in a location seen from Route 128, at 51 Needham Road. The empty building, adjacent to  and , has been vacant for about five years. Turner’s Seafood, a family owned local business dating back to the 1920's, is vying for a location in town, and at  in Danvers, members approved their request for a home-rule petition for an all-alcohol license.

It’s sad news for those that appreciate organic eating. Each Peach Café on Route 1 in Danvers closed its doors on May 16. 

 appealed to the Selectmen for a five-day entertainment license that would allow for a three-piece band or DJ.  

Borders said he hopes to have bands and an occasional DJ at night, as well as a possible jazz brunch on Sunday mornings.

Daily Harvest fans rejoice - the café is opening a second location in Danvers at Cherry Hill Office Park. The café promises a larger dining room and outdoor seating.
