The fourth annual A Reason to Ride bike-a-thon presented by Fuddruckers in support of the leading-edge cancer care and research at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) is set for September 18. In addition to 10- , 25- or 50- mile bike rides through the scenic towns of the north shore, A Reason to Ride, a signature event of BIDMC’s Grateful Nationfeatures activities the whole family will enjoy.

Launched in 2008 by brain cancer survivor and grateful patient Tom DesFosses, A Reason to Ride has brought together hundreds of cyclists and raised more than $160,000 in support of cancer care and research at the Medical Center. In 2003, DesFosses was diagnosed with primary central nervous system lymphoma, a malignant brain tumor. To express his gratitude to Eric Wong, M.D., the BIDMC cancer expert whom he credits with saving his life, DesFosses turned his cycling hobby into a fundraiser in support of Dr. Wong’s Brain Tumor Center. Now in its four year, A Reason to Ride has expanded its support to include other cancer areas at BIDMC.

“I continue to be grateful to the staff at BIDMC for the incredible care I received and am thrilled that, through the ride, I have the opportunity to aid the Medical Center in its efforts to some day cure cancer,” said DesFosses. “The success of A Reason to Ride in such a short time is proof that cancer touches all of our lives and that people will pull together for a cause.”
