Danvers People-to-People Food Pantry Shelves "Depleted" After Busy Summer

The shelves at the Danvers have been "completely depleted" due to the high numbers of families in need in town. 

The volunteer operation, which has been running for 17 years, currently supplies food, diapers, and supplies to families of need in Danvers, including those in the three motels in Danvers. 

From July-August 18 People-to-People reported spending approximately $9,156, not including the town summer park programs' food, which was also supplied. "The cost has just been enormous," said co-chair and treasurer Ellie Hersey. "I feel bad but we just can't keep doing this."

In the span of one month Hersey reported the volunteers making 86 trips to the three motels that house homeless families in town. When food is brought each family receives approximately 2-3 bags of groceries, costing about $30-40. 

Located at 12 Sylvan St., the food pantry accepts monetary and non-perishable food donations. They also noted that diapers have been one of the prime items on their grocery shopping lists. 

The 27 volunteers who work at the pantry received applause from the Selectmen and audience at the meeting for their continued efforts.
