A team of staff and students at North Shore Community College in Danvers recently spent eight days in Haiti to build a new house for a poor Haitian family.

The Andover Townsman reports the group was volunteering with Partners in Development, a nonprofit faith-based organization in Ipswich that has launched long-term poverty relief efforts in Haiti and Guatemala. Three members of the group were Andover residents.

According to the Townsman, the team was working in 95-degree dusty conditions in the town of Blanchard, which is in a new neighborhood called Canaan outside the capital of Port-au-Prince.

The trip was led by NSCC academic counselor Marty Rodweller and NSCC staff tell the paper the college is considering creating a formal international studies program based on feedback from this experience.
