Leaf Pickup, Thanksgiving, Football, Santa and More This Week

Here's what you need to know to get your week started in Danvers.

Today is Monday, Nov. 25. Here's a look at the week ahead in Danvers.

  1. Put your leaves at the curb this week for pickup. Collection will be on your regular trash and recycling day, although pickup will be delayed by one day, starting Thursday, due to Thanksgiving.
  2. Town board meetings: The Danvers Affordable Housing Trust meets Monday (7 p.m.) in the Town Manager's Conference Room, the Planning Board meets Tuesday (7 p.m.) in the Toomey Room, the Retirement Board meets Wednesday (3 p.m.) in the Town Manager's Conference Room and the Conservation Commission meeting, which is normally scheduled for the fourth Thursday of the month, has been canceled.
  3. Thanksgiving is Thursday. The Danvers Public Schools will dismiss students for Thanksgiving recess on Wednesday at the following times: 11:35 a.m. at Danvers High School and Holten-Richmond Middle School and 12:05 p.m. at all elementary schools. No lunch will be served that day. Over at St. John's Prep and Essex Aggie, the break starts at the end of the day on Tuesday.
  4. The annual Thanksgiving Day game between Danvers and Gloucester is up in Gloucester (10 a.m.) and St. John's Prep hosts Xaverian Brothers this year (10:15 a.m.) to continue the longstanding rivalry.
  5. Black Friday means the Liberty Tree Mall, Northshore Mall and many other larger stores are opening their doors at midnight Friday for hordes of shoppers hunting on deep holiday discounts.
  6. Interested in serving on the Danvers Retirement Board? There's a vacancy now for the fifth member of the board. Submit a letter of interest, listing your qualifications, no later than the end of business on Nov. 29. Letters can be mailed or hand delivered to the Danvers Retirement System, 1 Sylvan St., Danvers, MA 01923 or via email to slittle@mail.danvers-ma.org. Danvers Retirement Board members are responsible for overseeing the administration of retirement benefits to more 900 active and retired public employees in town and control the assets of the Danvers Retirement System. Applicants cannot be an employee, retiree or official of the town of Danvers. The term of office runs from the date of appointment through the end of the existing term on Oct. 27, 2016.
  7. Operation Troop Support needs some extra hands Saturday when it puts addresses on those thousands of Christmas packages volunteers have spent time wrapping and brings them over to the Danvers Post Office for shipment overseas. The day begins at 9 a.m. at the VFW Hall at 5 Conant St. Stop down if you'd like to help out and volunteer.
  8. Santa returns to the Danvers SwampWalk on Saturday to raise funds for Toys for Tots. You can take pictures with Santa starting at 11 a.m.
  9. Stop by 3 and 5 Arthur St. around 5 p.m. for some Christmas lights, cookies and cocoa for kids on Saturday, and you can help support Children's Hospital Boston. Each year the Christmas decorations at the Elliotts' home and their neighbors, the Boudreaus, get bigger and brighter, drawing many an onlooker. Three years ago they decided to raise money for a good cause while they were at it.
  10. The Danvers Historical Society presents "A Designers' Holiday Show House" starting this Sunday from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Nationally known designers transform the historical mansion at Glen Magna by redecorating 15 rooms to show off their work. The show runs Dec. 1-15.
