Annual Two-Day Town Recycling Event is This Weekend

Residents can recycle all sorts of items at the annual town event that aren't normally picked up at the curb.

Danvers recycles this weekend -- the town Department of Public Works is holding its annual Zero Waste Recycling Weekend Saturday and Sunday over at the high school.

The event, which is co-sponsored by the Big Brother Big Sister Foundation, Got Books, JRM and XTechnology Global, is part of the America Recycles campaign to promote local recycling programs. It also gives residents an opportunity to drop off items that aren't picked up at the curb during the week.

The hours both days are 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. in the high school parking lot by the tennis courts (60 Cabot Rd.).

Here's what residents can bring:

  • Bagged clothing, shoes, purses, linens, stuffed animals and small toys for Big Brother Big Sister.
  • XTechnology Global will collect electronics, including TVs and computer monitors ($15 each up to 20 inches, $25 for larger displays), air-conditioners and dehumidifiers ($5 each) and computers ($3 each). Cell phones, laptops and other small electronics are free. Certificates of Destruction are also available ($5 each) and XTechnology Global will donate half the money collected to the Danvers Community Council.
  • Got Books will collect books, DVDs, CDs, VHS tapes, cassette tapes, audio books and records -- no magazines or encyclopedias.
  • JRM will shred up to two boxes of your confidential papers for free (there is a $5 charge for subsequent boxes) and will donate all money to the Danvers Community Council as well. JRM will also collect rigid plastics (trash barrels, buckets, tubs, bins, outdoor furniture, toys, etc.).
  • Metal items (file cabinets, grills, bicycles, hangers, appliances, patio furniture, curtain rods, doors, ironing boards, ladders, etc.) will be collected for recycling by the DPW.

And on Saturday only, Cub Scout Pack 16 will be collecting redeemable bottles and cans.

You can find more information on the Public Works page of the town website or call 978-777-0001 ext. 3011. Check Facebook and Twitter for updates from the Danvers DPW as well.
