The 1st Lt. John A. Fera U.S. Army Reserve Center was rededicated to the fallen Vietnam war hero in 2006. Fera, a graduate of the Danvers High School Class of 1966, was killed in action ion March 18, 1968, serving with the 173rd Airborne Brigade. The brigade, which lost nearly 1,800 soldiers in Vietnam, is famously known for the Battle of Dak To, in which it suffered heavy losses in close combat with the North Vietnamese. "Sky Soldiers" of the 173rd were awarded more than 6,000 Purple Hearts. The brigade returned home in 1972 and was inactivated until 2000.
The base off North Street, located on 12 acres, is home to the local contingent of the 94th Division, one of three major divisions under the 80th Training Command, which is based out of Virginia. The Army Reserve units are deployed both domestically and internationally. The base is also known as Nike Station.
