Town of Danvers: Transfer Station

Nestled off Route 1 South, the town transfer station and sanitary landfill, while publicly owned, is operated byMore Covanta Energy and only for use by Danvers residents and certain commercial trash that originates in town.

The transfer station is for solid waste only: hazardous materials, appliances, recyclables, chemical and liquid wastes and construction debris are not allowed. Residential trash must come from the residence shown on the driver's license and registration and only non-commercial vehicles are allowed to enter.

There is a tipping fee payable to the Town of Danvers. Car tires are also accepted for a fee, but there's no charge for residential scrap metal. Most hazardous materials can be disposed of for free during the town's annual Household Hazardous Waste Day.

There is a drop-off facility on-site for leaves and other yard waste. No charge for leaves and grass clippings and you need a brush permit from the town. There is also a Universal Waste Shed on-site for mercury products, such as thermometers, thermostats, fluorescent light bulbs and switches. The shed is open during regular business hours.

This public works facility houses the street, water and sewer and equipment divisions of the department, whileMore serving as a garage and repair shop. In addition to a number of vehicles and equipment on-site, the offices for the supervisors of each division are located here as well.

The most visible function of the Street Division is its task to keep up 120 miles of town roadway and 150 miles of sidewalks (including keeping it all free of snow and ice), as well as picking up trash and recycling. Water & Sewer oversees the distribution and treatment of more than one billion gallons of public water in town and operates a state-certified lab for bacterial analysis. The lab is located on Lake Street in Middleton. The Equipment Division is chraged with, among other things, performing maintenance and repair on 240 pieces of equipment, which are used by the DPW, the schools, police and other town departments.
