Police: Evidence Will Lead to More Copper Theft Charges

Further charges will be filed against a Danvers man arrested early Monday morning in connection to the alleged theft of copper downspouts off a downtown Catholic church.

When James Richardson woke up his roommate early on Monday morning, his roommate thought Richardson wanted to run downtown to grab some cigarettes. But when the pair pulled in to the rear parking lot of the CVS store in Danvers Square at about 2:30 a.m. and looked to the rear of the lot, Richardson told him roommate, who was driving, “forget it, it’s not there.” At that point, it was clear to the roommate they were not there for cigarettes and instead to pick up scrap metal. Earlier in the night, police received a call from St. Mary of the Annunciation church on Conant Street. At about 2:30 a.m. a man was spotted trying to steal a copper downspout off the church. The theft was interrupted and the man, dressed in all black, began to run. …

Alleged Church Copper Thief Nabbed Early Monday Morning

A Danvers man was arrested after allegedly stealing copper from a downtown Danvers church.

A man faces charges after he was caught red-handed allegedly stealing a copper downspout from St. Mary of the Annunciation church early Monday morning. James Richardson, 45, of 42 Summer St. in Danvers was charged with larceny over $250 and malicious damage. There was another person with Richardson but they do not face charges, said Chief Neil Ouellette. Danvers police were first alerted to the theft with a call from the church at 2:29 a.m. When police got there they found a 20 foot piece of the church’s downspout on the sidewalk with nobody around it. So police waited in the area "and sure enough somebody returned," Ouellette said. Police said they followed that person in their vehicle and they were stopped near 187 Maple St. That's when …
