It happened on Sunday, Jan. 6 and the final resident was back on Wednesday, Feb. 6, according to Peter Mirandi, director of the Board of Health. Mirandi said he plans to meet with the Fire Department this week to develop an "after-action report." Federal Help Requested For Contaminated Factory Site

The former Creese and Cook Co. leather factory site has been found to contain hazardous contaminants.

Danvers is turning to the Federal government for help cleaning up contaminated sites on Water and Clinton streets, and inside the Crane River.  The Mass. Department of Environmental Protection and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency briefed the Danvers Board of Health on the status of a Federal Superfund grant for the former Creese & Cook leather factory site, at last week's meeting.  Along the railroad track, inside the Crane River sediment and the soil at a portion of the 33 Water St. condominiums and 55 Clinton St. property were found to contain harmful contaminants: arsenic, dioxin and chromium.   The contaminants stemmed from the Creese & Cook co. former leather factory, where animal hides were processed into shoe, handbag, glove and…

Town Seeks Legal Action Against Days Inn

The motel on Endicott Street is alleged to be in violation of sanitary codes.

Editor's Note: The number of homeless families living in the motel has been changed to accurately reflect the latest number. The town of Danvers is taking legal action against Days Inn, based on alleged violations of the sanitary code.  Danvers Health Director Peter Mirandi told the Board of Health that the town filed on Thursday morning in housing court. Mirandi said chronic dampness, which propagates mold, was one of the major concerns at the 152 Endicott Street motel.  "[Days Inn] should meet the minimum fitness for human habitation," Mirandi said to Board members.  As of last week, there are currently 58 families, including more than 80 children, living in the motel.  Some of the families, Mirandi said, have been living in the motel …

I think she's implying that the Town just wants these families out of Danvers. Not only are they paying thousands of dollars to bus and educate them, but they do not receive any tax money from "residents" at the hotels like they do normal transients. Seems plausible when you consider that the families living there must have regular visitation with State social workers and DCF workers and yet the …   more ›

Arsenic Found In Crane River, Former Leather Factory Site

The DEP and EPA discovered hazardous contaminants in the area surrounding the former Creese and Cook Tannery on Water Street.

The Mass. Department of Environmental Protection and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency this month will begin a process to decontaminate surface soils surrounding the former Creese and Cook Tannery on Water Street, areas that were deemed an imminent health hazard earlier this year. The main contaminants found on the site were arsenic, chromium, and dioxin, Danvers Health Director Peter Mirandi told the Board of Health on Thursday. Along the railroad track, inside the Crane River sediment and the soil at the 33 Water St. and 55 Clinton St. property have all been deemed imminent hazards that pose both human health and ecological risks. The areas have been fenced since February 2012. The fifth location, a vacant wooded area on Cheever …

Looks like the EPA has released an official statement (link below) and there was only a very small portion of soil that is an imminent hazard and is being removed now. Good news for those that live there. I live in the area too and the problem is that no one will be accountable. The companies that dumped 50 to 100 years ago are not around any more. You're on your own or partnering with the EPA. …   more ›

Town Seeks Help in Identifying Asbestos Dumper

Asbestos was found in the dumpster behind Thorpe Elementary School earlier this week.

The dumpster was removed to the town's Transfer Station and was taken in for sampling by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). A new dumpster was brought to the elementary school, but when the custodian returned Tuesday morning, he found more debris had been dumped. Mirandi told the Salem News the debris appears to have possibly come from a house in the Woodvale subdivision …

Exactly! Lock the dumpsters. Perhaps there is a property owner out there who had asbestos removed recently (and probably paid a large amt. of money for "legal disposal") who would come forward and identify who did the work. Have permits for this work been researched?   more ›
