Inside the New Danvers High School [PHOTOS]

The $71 million Danvers High School project is on schedule and under budget, DPW director David Lane told selectmen last week.

When Danvers high school students return to Cabot Road on Sept. 5, they'll be entering the newly renovated Danvers High School.   Danvers Public Works director David Lane last week updated the Board of Selectmen on the work being done over the summer by DPW employees, school personnel and Bacon Construction.  The front and west parking lots have been paved, classrooms have been cleaned, and the HVAC system is being balanced to provide proper airflow. Auditorium seats have been installed and the woodwork on the walls is nearing completion.  The most significant issue, Lane said, has been the new bleachers not being compatible with the Field House floor.  "Unfortunately, when the bleachers were installed it quickly became apparent that they …

Liberty Street To Undergo $7.1 Million Reconstruction

Described as 'a tricky one' by Danvers DPW Director David Lane, the Mass DOT project is slated to begin in spring 2013.

Just when you thought road closures, traffic, and construction were winding down in Danvers: Mass Department of Transportation (DOT) has approved a three-year $7.1 million project that will reconstruct 3,000 feet on Liberty Street.  Danvers Public Works Director David Lane said the project is necessary for the replacement of the two granite block culverts at the Porter River.  "It's in danger of collapsing, we need to replace it," Lane told the selectmen at Tuesday night's meeting.  Because of the high costs of the replacement, the town applied under Mass DOT's Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), which Lane said means the town funds the design in accordance with state guidelines, and the state pays for it. Lane said Danvers applied …

Speliotis: I'm Not As Supportive of Bottle Bill As I Was [POLL]

Speliotis said he is unsure if Danvers residents, who switched to mandatory curbside recycling in January, would benefit from the proposed bill.

House and Senate leaders started debating Wednesday whether to include an expanded bottle deposit amendment in a bill designed to spur job creation. The expanded bottle deposit amendment would put 5-cent deposits on bottles of water, juice, iced tea and sports drinks.  While State Rep. Ted Speliotis (D-Danvers) said he has always been supportive of the bottle bill in the past, now he said he doesn't know if his constituents in Danvers would benefit from the proposed changes.  "I do have reservations, because Danvers has gone to mandatory recycling," he said.  Speliotis, who lives in Danvers, said he participates in the mandatory curbside recycling with plastic water bottles, but opts to bring soda cans and bottles back to the grocery store…

@Sean Ward, It is currently administratively illegal for end disposers like Wheelabrator to accept recyclable materials as trash. Some municipalities and towns will fine (after a warning) people who put recyclables in trash, or simply refuse to accept it. The problem is that MassDEP is vastly understaffed (and has been for years) so these kinds of things don't get enforced. If you want this, …   more ›

Danvers Bumps Up Water Restrictions to Level 4

Danvers outdoor watering with sprinklers and/or irrigation systems will now be only allowed on Tuesday and Saturday from 7-10 p.m.

The following is courtesy of the Danvers Department of Public Works:  The Town of Danvers announces an increase in water restrictions to Level 4.  This means outdoor watering with sprinklers and/or irrigation systems is allowed on Tuesday and Saturday ONLY from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM.  Hand watering (hand held hoses with nozzles and watering cans) is allowed anytime.  Car washing is also allowed.  This change in restrictions is due to the low flow in the Ipswich River.  The reservoir remains at normal conditions. These water restrictions were instituted when the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) mandated regulations as part of the Water Management Act, due to growing concerns of highly stressed river basins.  Danvers …

Are Danvers' New Smart Meters Safe?

The Department of Public Works addresses residents concerns about the new smart meters.

Danvers residents have been calling the Department of Public Works, asking about the safety of smart meters.  The DPW has sent out the following information to address residents concerns:  Danvers is in the middle of its meter replacement program.  Customers will benefit from more accurate readings, elimination of estimates and improved customer service. As of May 1, 2012, Danvers has installed 6,680 electric meters and 883 water meters.  The anticipated completion date will be next January.  As meters continue to be installed, a question that was raised is: “Are These Safe?”  Danvers has performed due diligence as required by the Smart Grid Investment Funding we received for the meter replacement program, as well as for customer safety …
