Woman Arrested on Warrants, Drug Charge After Report of Fight at Motel

Police say a 23-year-old Hanson woman had more than 100 prescription pills in her pocket when she was taken into custody and was wanted in Boston on several other drug charges.

Danvers police responded to a report of a fight inside a room at Motel 6 early Friday morning and ended up arresting one woman after officers discovered she had multiple warrants out for her apprehension. It turned out she had more than 100 prescription pills in her pants pocket as well. Danvers Police Sgt. Robert Bettencourt said officers arrived to the scene shortly after 6 a.m. and found four people inside the room, but all denied there was a fight. One person was left with a bloodied face, however, he said. Upon running a check for warrants on any of the individuals, police discovered one woman had three, all out of Boston for drug charges. Marissa Burton, 23, of Hanson, was then taken into custody by officer John Melto, which is when …

Two Peabody residents are charged with larceny for allegedly stealing potted pansies from two grave sites at a cemetery in town.

If you recall, last week we reported on an incident at a cemetery in town where someone was caught stealing flowers from the grounds. It turns out there were two females involved in the thievery -- a 46-year-old and an 18-year-old -- both of whom are from Peabody. Danvers Police Sgt. and spokesman Robert Bettencourt said they were each issued a court summons on a charge of larceny under $250. And yes, according to the witness who called police, the females were removing potted pansies from their plant hangers at two grave sites.

Jury Finds Limbaugh Guilty on All Counts

Roy Limbaugh, a convicted Level 3 sex offender, was found guilty of the attempted murder of Danvers police officer John Melto and will spend at least 24 years behind bars.

A jury found Roy Limbaugh guilty on all seven charges against him in Salem Superior Court today and the 59-year-old Danvers man was then sentenced to at least 24 years in prison for nearly killing Danvers police officer John Melto in a bloody scuffle two years ago. Limbaugh received 19-20 years on a charge of armed assault with intent to murder and 14-15 years on other assault charges, said Danvers Police Sgt. and spokesman Robert Bettencourt, who attended today's deliberations. Bettencourt said those two sentences were imposed concurrently and Limbaugh will then have to serve 5-6 years for failure to properly register as a sex offender with local police. Once his time is served out, Limbaugh would be on lifetime parole. The trial began …

Verdict Possible Today in Limbaugh Case

The jury continues deliberations on seven charges against a Danvers man accused of slashing a Danvers police officer during a scuffle outside the man's home.

Both sides gave closing arguments Wednesday and the jury returns to Salem Superior Court today to continue deliberations and decide if Roy Limbaugh is innocent or guilty on each of the seven charges against him. Limbaugh, 59, is accused of slashing Danvers police officer John Melto and inflicting serious injuries during a scuffle near Limbaugh's mobile home on Popes Lane in August 2011. He faces charges including failure to register as a sex offender, armed assault with intent to murder, aggravated assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault and battery on a police officer. Limbaugh, a convicted Level 3 sex offender who has represented himself in the case, claims Melto's injuries were self-inflicted and that Melto actually …

Peabody Woman Arrested for Attacking, Spitting at Officer

Police say one female was refused a drink by bar staff because she was already apparently intoxicated and then the situation got violent when an officer located the vehicle across the street.

Danvers police arrested a Peabody woman and issued a court summons to an underage Ipswich female after an incident at Applebee's around midnight on Sunday. Police spokesman Sgt. Robert Bettencourt said officers were initially called to the restaurant by staff who had refused to serve a drink to a female customer at the bar who appeared intoxicated. The female then left the restaurant and drove off in a vehicle, but was soon located by Officer John Melto across Endicott Street in the parking lot at Wendy's. The 20-year-old Ipswich female was then issued a summons for driving under the influence of alcohol. Bettencourt said there was a female passenger in the vehicle, however, and she became uncooperative and fought with Melto, spitting at …

Danvers Officer Takes Stand to Recount Bloody Scuffle

Surgeon says wounds inflicted on officer barely missed vital arteries and veins, which could have quickly led to his death.

Danvers police officer John Melto took the witness stand on Thursday, recalling the details of the incident that almost led to his death in August 2011 allegedly at the hands of convicted sex offender Roy Limbaugh. Limbaugh's trial got underway in Salem Superior Court last week. He is facing several charges, including armed assault with intent to murder, and is representing himself. Limbaugh is accused of attacking Melto with some sort of sharp object outside his residence on Popes Lane and inflicting serious injuries on the Danvers officer. A surgeon who operated on Melto testified that multiple cuts to his throat just missed his carotid artery, internal jugular vein and trachea, which likely would have been fatal injuries, reports the …

Police Called to Cemetery for Person Stealing Flowers

They were pansies, in fact, and worth about $50, according to police.

Danvers police were called to St. Mary of the Annunciation Cemetery on Hobart Street Thursday afternoon on a report that someone was stealing flowers from the burial ground. Police spokesman Sgt. Robert Bettencourt said Friday the incident report was still in progress, but it appeared the suspect was an adult who was spotted plucking pansies worth about $50. According to the initial press log entry, officer Phil Tansey responded to the scene at 4:02 p.m. and subsequently issued a court summons to the suspect. Bettencourt said Friday, however, that it wasn't clear whether the matter had been resolved and the charge dropped or if there was still a criminal charge being filed.
