$4 EBT Purchase Leads to Alleged Baby Formula Thiefs

A couple that say they are homeless are facing charges that they stole $100s worth of baby formula from two Danvers businesses.

A $4 purchase of Gatorade and Powerade with an EBT card at Walmart helped lead police to a couple that had allegedly stolen about $1,000 worth of baby formula from two stores. The couple, Timothy, 24, and Katherine Bennett, 28, list a Wakefield address but told police they were homeless. Katherine Bennett has been charged with larceny over $250 and shoplifting while Timothy Bennett has been charged with two counts of both larceny over $250 and shoplifting. They were both arrested at Motel 6 on Route 1 earlier this week, where police had received information the pair was located. They were arraigned in Salem District Court and both were released on personal recognizance and scheduled to return for a pretrial hearing on March 11. Timothy …

Police Issue Warning on Commercial Vehicle Break-ins

Police are warning commercial truck owners to secure valuable items.

The Danvers Police Department issued a warning on its Facebook page Monday to the owners of commercial vehicles. There have been four reported break-ins in Danvers during the past two weeks where commercial vehicles were targeted, police said in its alert posted at 3:03 p.m. on Monday. Police said burglars targeted a box truck, a plumber’s van and two construction trucks - all during overnight hours. Tools, copper wire, aluminum pipes and other scrap metal has been stolen, according to police. While police did not say where the thefts occurred in Monday's alert, according to recent activity logs one theft occurred on Garden Street and another on Holten Street. Alleged Church Copper Thief Nabbed Early Monday Morning

A Danvers man was arrested after allegedly stealing copper from a downtown Danvers church.

A man faces charges after he was caught red-handed allegedly stealing a copper downspout from St. Mary of the Annunciation church early Monday morning. James Richardson, 45, of 42 Summer St. in Danvers was charged with larceny over $250 and malicious damage. There was another person with Richardson but they do not face charges, said Chief Neil Ouellette. Danvers police were first alerted to the theft with a call from the church at 2:29 a.m. When police got there they found a 20 foot piece of the church’s downspout on the sidewalk with nobody around it. Two Drivers Hurt in Head-on Crash

The drivers of each of the cars that crashed head-on Tuesday evening on Tuesday night were injured.

Two women were injured in a head-on crash on Locust Street on Tuesday evening. The crash happened at about 4:45 near the intersection of North Street. One driver, a female in a Jeep sport utility vehicle, was unconscious when rescuers arrived and she was immediately transported to Beverly Hospital. The driver of a Subaru station wagon was also injured and taken to Beverly Hospital, according to the Danvers Fire Department. Neither driver was trapped in the car but neither could not get out on their own. “They had to be removed from the cars,” said firefighter Brian Barry, one of the responders. Nobody besides the drivers were involved in the crash, he said. The crash partially closed Locust Street for a time. Northbound traffic on Locust …

Two Danversport Businesses Being Evacuated After Chemical Spill

Nitric acid reportedly spilled at a Water Street business on Monday, causing two businesses to be evacuated.

Two businesses along Water Street in the Danversport neighborhood were evauated after a nitric acid spill on Monday afternoon. There were no known injuries. The Danvers Fire Department and Danvers Police Department reponded to Doe & Ingalls at 125 Water St. at about 1:40 p.m. A spill of eight gallons of nitric acid reportedly happened on the first floor of the business. At about 2 p.m., the Fire Department said it had the spill contained. Neighboring Harvey Industries plus the offices in the Doe & Ingalls building were both evauacted. Water Street remained open to traffic.

Patrice Tierney Injured in Danvers Car Accident

Patrice Tierney, wife of U.S. Rep. John Tierney, was treated and released from the hospital on Tuesday after a morning car crash in Danvers.

Patrice Tierney, wife of U.S. Rep. John Tierney (D-Salem), was injured Tuesday morning when her car was struck from behind by another car near the Highland Elementary School. Danvers Police Capt. Pat Ambrose said Patrice Tierney was taken to Beverly Hospital after the 8:21 a.m. crash. Tierney campaign manager Matt Robison said that Patrice was treated for unspecified injuries and released mid-day. The Boston Herald website showed a photo of Tierney getting into a car with his wife and another unnamed man in the hospital's parking lot. One other person was taken to the Leahey Clinic in Peabody after the crash and both of the cars involved were towed away, Ambrose said. Attempted Burglar Nabbed in Swamp by Police Dog

A suspected burglar who was interrupted while trying to get into a Danvers condominium on Monday night was caught in a nearby swamp.

The Danvers Police Department’s dog tracked down a man suspected of trying to break in to a condominium on Monday night. Police K9 Falco tracked Thomas Galligan, 43, of 36 Ash St. in North Attleboro from the River Run condos, on Abington Road behind Liberty Tree Mall, to a nearby swamp where he was arrested. Danvers Police Sgt. Robert Bettencourt said the brother of a condo resident stepped outside to smoke a cigarette at about 8:54 p.m. when he encountered Galligan allegedly trying to get into his brother’s condo by trying to pry open a rear glass sliding door.
